1992 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 16v DOHC

Summary:

Great performance and handling for the age of the car

Faults:

Replaced distributor cap and rotor as it had never been replaced in 150000km!

Starter motor recon at 155000km.

General Comments:

Quick car if you keep the revs over 4k.

Superb handling and brakes.

Very comfortable with leather upholstery.

I love driving this car, and get out on the weekends for a fast drive out in the country or a quiet (ish) cruise around town.

With all the adverse comments I have heard about these cars, this car has proved very reliable, and I put it down to regular maintenance and not thrashing it until it is warmed up properly. Even at this mileage, the oil stays like new between 5k changes.

1992 Peugeot 405 mi16 1.9

Summary:

Lurvely

Faults:

Nothing has ever really broken - I have a good and trustworthy mechanic, he checks the whole car when servicing it and I replace anything suspect before it breaks.

Have replaced engine mounts, cv boots, gear linkages, brake rotors etc. but that's all to be expected on a 13 year old car.

General Comments:

This car may not be the quickest off the mark, but is the most satisfying drive when you get it right. It has it's own personality and if you learn how it works and what it likes you will enjoy driving it like no other car!

On the downside, the bodywork has a lot to be desired - doesn't help that every time I park somewhere, someone runs into it or opens a door on it. the interior has a fair share of rattles n squeaks too..

1992 Peugeot 405 Mi 16 1.9 petrol

Summary:

This is not a city car, it likes a winding, open road

Faults:

Gearbox crunchy, synchromesh slow.

Power steering seems to take a while to warm up.

Catalytic converter burned out.

Radiator cap replaced.

Harmonic balance replaced 130,000km plus timing chain.

General Comments:

I bought this car on the net from Melbourne and drove it immediately to Brisbane, 1850 km, over two days. It did not miss a beat.

I decided to buy it rather than a BMW 318is, which is also 1900cc, but slower and dearer. The Peugeot handles brilliantly, has 30mpg consumption, but a heavy and slow gearbox. Some models came with timber trim, but this one has the glass sunroof, leather, 5 speed box with a very tall first gear and all electrics.

1992 Peugeot 405 GR 1.9L

Summary:

A stylish 1992 European car

Faults:

Needed new front and back brakes, and rear brake cylinders a week after I'd bought it.

Blows black soot out of the exhaust when you rev it up.

Had to get an oil change almost immediately as it was very black. Possibly due to lack of care from the previous owner.

General Comments:

Apart from the above problems, I'm very happy with the car. Best car I've ever owned. Looks great.

The seating is comfortable.

Hot air on front side windows de-fogs the windows.

1992 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 16v

Summary:

Well worth the effort!

Faults:

Knocking in the front suspension.

Faulty power windows.

Dodgy central locking.

Had to replace the clutch.

Fan computer replaced.

Leaks a lot of oil and no-one can find the problem.

General Comments:

Overall the car has been great except for the little annoying problems. The performance is a bit sluggish, but I'm looking at a turbo and intercooler kit so that should help.

The car is very comfortable and handling is excellent.

Fuel economy is quite good as well. So I think all the little problems are worth the effort cause you become very attached to the car!!

I drive a MI16 J (Reg) I agree a slight knocking on Front suspension, performance is well sorted / sluggish on bottom end but 100mph plus infact 130 & more a licence loser. Electric window control switches become annoying but overall with her being black she's a beast. 100k and still in the fast lane. nu-metal@breathe.com.

1992 Peugeot 405 SRi 1.9

Summary:

A fantastic driving car that breaks down a lot

Faults:

HEAPS! I panick every time I take it to get serviced.

Major (cost wise) things were:

Broken manifold.

Leaking radiator (under warranty).

Faulty electric windows.

Ignition module.

Leaking gearbox input.

General Comments:

This car gives sheer driving pleasure, it has fantastic ride and handling (it sticks to the road like glue), but it constantly seems to fall apart. Other 405 owners I know all have had similar problems (but sport similar grins when driving). Be warned!

8/10 for performance because I would prefer more power, but the SRi is one of the lower spec versions.

Seat comfort is terrific, 9 hour drives are a breeze for both front and back passengers. Roomy interior.

Anyone looking to begin the move towards purchasing a driver's car should definitely consider this as a first step, just keep some cash aside for the repairs.

If possible, grab the Mi16, possibly one of the cheapest pre 1995 performance sedans around.

You are REALLY putting me off owning the car! We have a 1.8 GL and the gearbox just died... now I have a feeling this isn't the end of our fun!

Otherwise the car is amazing for what it is - a family car that performs like a supermini.
