1998 Subaru Legacy RSB 2.0 twin turbo boxer 4

Summary:

Absolutely AWESOME car

Faults:

Alternator, battery, radiator and clutch.

General Comments:

Awesome car. Seriously the best car I've owned. Did over 130k in it and only had to replace the clutch, alternator, radiator and battery.

Did cambelt, WP, idler tensioners, cam seals, rocker cover seals and plugs at 100k.

Did clutch, main seals, trans fluid and diff fluid at 120k.

Was running bigger turbos and a Zerosports sequential controller, and it went hard and gave me NO grief.

Changed the oil every 5k and filter every 10k. Ran 98 octane gas.

Replaced it with a string of unreliable BMWs, and have now bought an '02 Legacy RS30 with 64k on the clock. Looking forward to a few years of trouble free motoring.

1998 Subaru Legacy GT 2.0 twin turbo petrol

Summary:

Unknown at this stage, too early to tell

Faults:

Just got it a week ago.

Front passenger side speaker stating to crackle under loud music.

General Comments:

This car is a lot more powerfull that my old 92 ford laser!, although I have noticed that I'm only doing 400kms to the tank where I was doing 700kms to the tank with my old laser, I am also using 98 unleaded fuel which is a lot more expensive than 91.

Just wish it could be more economical.

Other than that a very nice car to drive, runs quiet and smooth on the road.

Hi, I've got a 1999 Subaru Legacy GT-B 5spd, and I tried a tank of 98 octane and it drank it in 400kms, so I stick with 95, which gets me 500kms to a tank :)

Anyone ever had any problems with alternators?? My step-dad is having a hell of a time, batteries keep dying on him (one after another!) and he thinks it's the alternator. But still needs to be checked out by a mechanic. He has had nothing but trouble since purchasing to be honest. Also, his only takes mini-discs...

I know this reply is late, but it's quite possible that the battery is being drained via a faulty starter...

1998 Subaru Legacy GTB Wagon 2.0 turbo Boxer

Summary:

Quick Big car

Faults:

Air condition unit failed twice. The unit is very fragile. The first unit failed on the temperature dial and the second unit failed on the OFF/ AUTO buttons. Wind noise and rattle from the back.

General Comments:

The car is brilliant considering the performance and handling. Its very comfortable and spacious too. However, the Air Con unit is just hopeless and very expensive to get it replaced or fixed. I have replaced 2 units since I got it 8 months ago and they are very expensive and very hard to find (because of the high demand?)

The petrol is just alright for its size and weight.

Another problem is the back seat. The middle passenger seat on the back is horrible to sit on especially for long trip.

Overall, if there is no problem on the air con, I will score this car a very high marks.

1998 Subaru Legacy LX 2.2

Summary:

Great family wagon with street appeal, speed and handling

Faults:

Nothing actually went wrong, but my brother is a mechanic and he recommended a new cam belt as soon as I got it, and just as well, it needed one. These are supposed to be done at each 100,000kms (brother is a World Rally Championship Subaru mechanic so I think he knows what he's talking about :o)

Other than that, nothing! It's a dream car.

General Comments:

This car handles very well, as its 4 wheel drive, and I'm sure it's saved our lives a few times! Once on an ice patch, we skidded out and the car corrected itself. Also, when going a bit too fast into a corner, the car handles beautifully.

Of course, being a 4 wheel drive, it chews through tyres a bit.

Excellent room in the cabin, and a large boot -we've slept overnight in it (and my husband is over 6 foot). Loaded up with the monthly groceries, including a large chilly bin, and two kids under 5, it's still got room to spare.

Highly recommend this vehicle. Manage to get an average of 500 kilometres per 50 litre tank of gas, could get more, but sometimes I have a lead foot.
