1990 Subaru Liberty GX (All Wheel Drive) 2.2 4 cylinder Boxer engine

Summary:

A reliable and inexpensive vehicle, the Liberty is an enjoyable drive every time

Faults:

Nothing major - replaced parts as follows:

- Muffler replaced (old one was corroded when bought)

- Rear suspension arm bushes replaced (old ones were worn out, some signs of rust developing)

- Low petrol warning light does not always function.

General Comments:

This has been a fantastic first car so far. The velour interior has worn exceptionally well, and is still very comfortable. The interior space is definately appreciated by the driver and his passengers - both the amount of interior room and boot space are exceptional for a mid-size sedan.

In terms of performance and handling, the Liberty can take a little while to warm up, but once it has reached optimum operating temp it accelerates keenly, brakes hard, and handles like you would not believe. The steering is much more precise than other mid-size sedans I have driven (Holden Astra, Ford Laser) : it really is almost a matter of point-and-go.

Keeping this car on the road hasn't cost me an arm and a leg - luckily given that I am a student. A full service (including front brake pad change, oil filter, etc.) should cost less than $350. Used parts are not too difficult to source: my replacement muffler cost me $60. Unfortunately insurance isn't too cheap, and fuel economy is nothing to write home about (I tend to get 450 to 500km off a 60 litre tank).

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

You should get it looked at if you can only get 450-500kms a tank... Mine's done over 450k and I still get a good 600kms out of a tank. But yes, a brilliant car. It's my baby.

Yeah a good car handles well, have an issue with the fuel gauge, but it is great to drive, good stereo as well.

Oh, thanks mate. Mine's got 384,000 on it, and I thought the fuel consumption would go up from age. Nothing to worry about though!

Thanks again

I am very happy with my 1990 Subaru Liberty. It has done 196538.

One problem. The water is evaporating and my mechanic has checked everything and can't find the problem. Has anyone had the same problem? Very frustrating. Have to keep topping it up every 10k.

1990 Subaru Liberty GX Wagon 2.2 Litre petrol

Summary:

Great car for cruising, can carry a lot of luggage. AVOID AIRBAG SUSPENSION LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Faults:

Airbag suspension compressor worn out internally. Replacing with springs and shocks.

RDS wheel bearing tore apart at 220,000 km. Replaced.

Power steering leaking a little, will fix shortly.

RDS Door handle (inside) spring worn out, locks itself.

General Comments:

It's quite a zippy car for station wagon, the 2.2 Litre Boxer is great and never dies.

Comfort is great, and sunroof is only a problem with drunks in the car as you can't lock the controls like you can with the windows.

Central locking is great, cup-holders a little small for a bottle of coke.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know
