1982 Toyota Corolla CS 1.3 petrol

Summary:

The most reliable car I have owned, but it compromises on comfort and power

Faults:

The car is over 20 years old so you can expect a few things to be wrong with it. The previous owner hadn't maintained it very well so it required a bit of work when I first obtained it. The clutch went at 197000 which cost only $50 to repair. When I looked at the old clutch it was a genuine Toyota so it could have been the original. The radiator had rusted out so that needed replacing too. I drove the car down south at 110km/h for about 5 hours which caused some serious damage to the 4th piston. The car held together despite all the mechanics in the town telling me it won't make it home. Not only did it get home, but I drove to work and back for a month before I bought a 2nd hand engine. I knew the engine was tired before I took it for that drive so it was not an unexpected failure.

General Comments:

The car is not the most glamorous looking vehicle nor is it the sort of car you would do bog laps down your local coffee strip, however, its very cheap to run, repair, insure, register and because of all this they hold their value very well.

1982 Toyota Corolla CS 1.3L

Summary:

This is a car that people should look at buying!

Faults:

Warped Head due to the it was driven.

Timing chain at 185,000. It was 23yrs old.

Rear wheel bearings when bought it. Easy/cheap to fix.

Only real problem was rust in the rear quarters and around the boot.

General Comments:

Car handles really well in corners, but sways around at speeds around 130km. Wider tyres would have helped.

Real easy to drive. Perfect first car.

Cheap to run and reliable.

Parts cheap and easy to get hold of.

1982 Toyota Corolla DX Wagon 1.3

Summary:

You just can't kill these cars

Faults:

Leaking Heater Core.

General Comments:

Great car. Very economical. Most reliable car I have ever owned. No matter what you did to it, it would not die. You could drive it until the oil light came on, pull over and put 3 and a half liters of oil in the engine and be off again, with no ill effects on the engine. Only ever saw a workshop of a new oil filter twice in my ownership.

Performance was nothing great, but still good for a car pushing 20 years old. Handling and brakes where comparable for cars of this era.

1982 Toyota Corolla CS KE70 1.3L Unleaded

Summary:

Good, Reliable First Car

Faults:

Only minor problems like fuel pump needing to be replaced and ballast resistor but no other real problems.

General Comments:

Very reliable car.

Not too much in way of features with only a AM/FM radio and no air conditioning, but gets the job done.

Performance is not too bad considering the 1.3l engine, but don't expect to get up to 100km/h (60mph) too quickly.

Quite fun to drive especially as it is quite light.
