1985 Toyota Corolla 1.6

Summary:

Great reliable little car that is very cheap to maintain

Faults:

The only thing that went wrong with the car was a hole in the radiator hose.

General Comments:

What the car the lacked in looks, handling and performance, it sure as hell made up in reliability. Corollas are by far the most reliable cars you can buy. It was a excellent car and was incredibly tough, as it had high tolerance for burnouts and driving it flat out. Not one thing went wrong with it at all.

Unfortunately my parents had to move and couldn't take the car with us. So the car ended up with my uncle who hardly drives it and won't give it back. At the time I had another a car, an XT Falcon ute, which I thought would be a good reliable daily driver; how wrong I was. Unfortunately that car was nothing but trouble, and cost me 2000 the first day I got it registered.

I definitely think the next car is going to be a Toyota Corolla. Fords and Holdens are by far the biggest pieces of rubbish.

1985 Toyota Corolla CSX 1.6 Litre Caburator

Summary:

Best 1.6 liter car

Faults:

Overheating due to corroded radiator soon after buying it. Changed head gasket to rectify overheating. Not the car's fault, as it was cheap when I bought it. The previous owner did not inform me of the corroded radiator.

General Comments:

For a 1.6 caburator engine, it gives other cars of its class a run for their money.

On steep slopes, it produces enough torque to maintain at 80km/h.

Nothing has gone wrong so far, even after long distance cruising.

Definitely an ideal car for work and to commute. Brought car to work in the harsh conditions of the farm. Mud, stones, gravel, nothing seems to hamper its movement.

Like what others said.. it just keeps going and going.

1985 Toyota Corolla GT 1.6 4AGE

Summary:

Unbelievable performance from a 1600 engine

Faults:

Gearbox lost 1st,2nd, 5th gears, replaced gearbox.

No other problems.

General Comments:

I bought this car for $1500 (NZ). The previous owner had already fitted it out with stabilizers and lowered it as well as hardened the suspension. This is a four door sedan and looks like a very standard car apart from the standard GT flares and badging. It is white, which does not make it stand out at all. Since I have had it I have had the following improvements to it:

2 ¼” exhaust.

Cam timing adjusted for about 12% performance improvement.

When I bought this car it was already very quick and would rev to 7000 and beyond running at about 126BHP. Now with the mods I have done it accelerates noticeably quicker and will give most turbo and non-turbo imports a run for their money at the lights. What is interesting is that it now has 145BHP, which does not seem like a lot, but it now has a huge amount of torque especially between 3500RPM to 6000RPM. The best thing I like about it is its ability to stick like glue to winding roads and pull out of them at ridiculous speeds. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone who wants the performance and reliability without the risk of blowing a turbo. One thing to watch is its ability to get sideways on tight roads if pushed, but being a front wheel drive it is easy to put back in line.

Cam timing adjusted for about 12% performance improvement. >>>>>> what does it mean, and please specify and give a few more words about to get good performance. 2 1/4? It just need a pipe way out to the exhaust, that's all? Or how to make this?

1985 Toyota Corolla FX-GT 1.6 Twincam EFi

Summary:

Cheap fun practical car

Faults:

Starter motor died.

Heater doesn't work.

Shock absorbers worn.

General Comments:

An absolutely fantastic car to drive. Revs freely to around 7500. Gearbox is smooth and slick.

The interior is in very good condition despite the age.

Parts are cheap and easily attainable.

Happy to run around town at low revs. On open roads it just rips along no problem.
