1996 Toyota Corolla Spirit 1.6 4A-FE

Summary:

Great little car for running around

Faults:

The headliner started falling off at about 81,000 km.

The clock light has stopped working.

The cassette deck acts weirdly sometimes.

General Comments:

I bought this car new at Lane Toyota in Glen Waverley in late April 1996. It has served me faithfully over all these years with nary a complaint.

Performance is acceptable considering it's an automatic.

Parts, if needed, are plentiful and cheap, as you can go to the local pick-n-pull and get the parts for chips.

It's easy to park.

Gets about 9L/100km / 26 MPG / 31 MPG in the city and about 6.5L / 36 MPG / 43 MPG on the freeway, so very economical. I would recommend the car.

Oh, and the seats are okay, and being locally produced, I supported local manufacturing at the time.

1996 Toyota Corolla CSi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Best car I've driven

Faults:

Only thing I've had go wrong is that the battery died (it was the original battery that came with the car).

General Comments:

Excellent reliability, 1.6 engine surprisingly punchy given its age also. Lags slightly with a few people or extra weight in the car (eg heavy luggage)

1996 Toyota Corolla Seca 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Very reliable, fun and comfortable to drive

Faults:

* Most of theses are due to general misuse from previous owner *

Cracked radiator @ 207000km; leaked coolant and overheated once.

Interior light didn't work, solder had come un-attached. Fixed this myself.

Power steering belt slips, does not affect performance in any way, just a noise.

Boot release failed @ 203000km.

Blown fuse @ 205000km, fuse belonging to stereo and cigarette lighter.

General Comments:

Very reliable, well made Toyota. Only serious things that have gone wrong are from previous owner's mistreatment. The rest of the problems are superficial.

Sits at 80-110 very nicely, comfortable seats with lots of headroom for a small car. Punchy, quick for a 1.6L engine and handles well. Has a very small turning circle, which makes it easy to park. Smooth to drive!

Only negative is it doesn't handle a full car (people) up any sort of hill very well. Starts to lack power.

But other than that, very highly recommended!

Crashed my 94 Corolla in an accident that wasn't my fault.

Got another Corolla, until I can buy a 4wd.

1996 Toyota Corolla Conquest 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Good reliable transportation

Faults:

The trim on the drivers door adjacent to the door opener had sagged with time.

My example had an alternator replaced at 45000km and again at 95000km - it was on its third one when it was sold.

General Comments:

The car is very well built and finished and drives well.

Reliability is great (except for the alternator - see above).

Performance is quite good when coupled to the manual transmission, but if there is a criticism it is that the handling is only average.
