1997 Toyota Sprinter Carib Z Touring (4WD) 1.8L petrol

Summary:

Nice family car for the older motorist

General Comments:

This car had incredibly comfortable seats, & was very smooth riding.

It stuck to the road unbelievably well, being full time four wheel drive, & could get around greasy tar-seal corners in the wet like nothing else. The 4WD also helped it handle brilliantly in thick gravel, making it a very safe car.

However, in being safe, it was very boring to drive. It gave a very dull, but comfortable ride, while at the same time chewing through petrol.

The performance was very much similar to two wheel drive cars with much smaller, & much more economical engines. On average, I managed roughly 10L/100km of city driving, emptying the 40L petrol tank relatively quickly.

Thank you for the vindication. I have the 1998 Carib Sprinter Rosso and everything you said, I can support. The fuel consumption is terrible for a sedan 40L tank = 400km, maybe less if you have to deal with traffic, and lots of stopping.

The pros are: A VERY safe vehicle, it sits on the road where a 2WD would over-steer. Steady torque at the expense of acceleration, and finally a very comfortable cabin. Not a great buy unless you need the space really.

1987 Toyota Sprinter Apex Trueno 1.6 DOHC

Summary:

Very quick car; comparable to the likes of an MR2

Faults:

Exhaust started to leak around 215000 K's.

Water pump needed replacing at 220000 K's.

Tensioners for cam-belt needed replacing after 220000kms.

Goes through front tyres a bit quicker than other front wheel drive cars.

General Comments:

Car has superb braking. Four wheel disc brakes, no ABS and a very light car, means this stops very very quick.

Great torque from the engine. Great for towing and getting over the mountains, Southern Alps etc.

Adjustable suspension. You can adjust between Soft, Sports and Hard, and it works superbly.

The manual gearbox is great. It is very strong, and easy to shift through the gears.

1984 Toyota Sprinter 1.6

Summary:

Owning mountains since 1983!

Faults:

Nothing really has gone wrong on its own.

Because I like to go sideways, I break a lot of things, but any car treated the way I treat it would.

General Comments:

Look many people don't know, but the Ae86 sprinter is a one of a kind car; it dominated all its classes in racing, and it's the best for drifting and handling. It goes great and the chassis balance is superb, and nothing can catch it through the hills. It's the car that started the sport of drifting; now the fastest growing motorsport in the world.

Rhe car is a gem. I've had a 400hp Skyline in the past, but still it will never earn a place in my heart like the ae86 has. It's a beauty. Please buy one and care for it more than your son. They are a true beast and for sure the best ever car made.

I agree the AE86 is a fantastic, bullet proof vehicle. I owned a std. JDM 1983 Toyota Trueno GTV 1600 DOHC 4AGE Manual 3Dr between 1991 and 97 in New Zealand from 60km to 130km. Nothing went wrong, but I replaced the rusty liftback lid for $100 before selling.

Would do 160km/h up steep hills in 5th gear.

Managed to turn off head lights a couple of times when flicking the dip stalk.

Car would be even better with alloy bonnet etc and firmer suspension. Now drive a 1992 WRX sedan.

1983 Toyota Sprinter 1.6L

Summary:

Best car ever

Faults:

Engine (only through neglect, never changed oil)

Dashboard starting to crack.

Clutch went at 140,000 km. (1st time replaced)

Clutch master cylinder started to leak at 180,000 km.

Starter motor replaced at 140,000 km.

General Comments:

This car is a seriously fun car.

In Australia it has a 1.6 carburetted engine, this can easly be replaced for a 1.6 twin cam fuel injected, supercharged or 1.6 20 Valve.

It is one of the most fun cars to drive on a twisty road.

It is a light weight rear wheel drive car with great handling. One of the best cars Toyota have ever made.

I have replaced my engine with a 4AGE 20 Valve with quad throttles as standard and it is my favourite car to drive.

Toyota makes really reliable cars that with basic care go on for ever.
