1997 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.8

Summary:

Don't buy it

Faults:

Engine knocks really bad.

Engine mounts replaced at 110000.

Water leaking through the trunk.

Central lock air pump went down.

Radiator pipes leaking.

Electric window went down.

Gear box problem.

Extremely expensive repair fees.

General Comments:

Seriously piece of crap, I've spent more than the car's value on repairs already.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I disagree entirely with the comments above. We have sadly had to part with our P registration CL diesel with only 160,000 miles on the clock, but the bodywork was starting to rust badly. I have been informed that this was due to the body being made of Polish steel that had rust integral to it.

However mechanically it has been very reliable, and still does over 50 mpg on a run. Minor problems early on with electric windows, but none recently. Now replaced by a 2002 TDI GT (130), which seems even better.
