2001 Ford Puma 16V 1.7 petrol

Summary:

Good experience; a fun and enjoyable car

Faults:

Excessive oil consumption.

Premature wear causes the engine to burn oil, so it is vital to use the exact lubricant recommended by Ford and keep the oil level checked.

Cooling system issues: Hoses tend to crack or burn due to heat. It is essential to check them periodically to prevent overheating.

The heating system radiator becomes clogged and stops working, cutting off the flow of warm air into the passenger compartment.

Due to its sporty nature, the suspension geometry is easily damaged by impacts with curbs. Noises or clunking sounds from the front end while driving indicate worn bushings or shock absorbers.

General Comments:

The car itself shares its platform with the Fiesta, so the interior is very similar—same steering wheel, same seats, and same dashboard. It is more than comfortable for two people, and it is a car designed specifically for two.

As a small car, it is very easy and comfortable to drive, handling city traffic exceptionally well.

It offers great agility and acceleration, very responsive braking, and a suspension that is neither stiff nor noisy.

The 1.7 16V engine has power to spare; for a small car, it is very quick. I love how it responds and accelerates when overtaking; if you want to pass a truck on the highway with this car—and this specific engine—you won't have any trouble.

That covers power and speed; as for reliability, I have no complaints, aside from excessive oil consumption. Considering it is a 2001 model, the fuel consumption isn't high either—it is typical for a 1.7-liter engine of that era.

Safe car for its time, coming standard with ABS and traction control, dual airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners, side-impact protection bars, and even a third brake light—features that began to become widespread in the 1990s.

It was built for one or two people—great if you like a small, agile, sporty car. As a first car or for taking your girlfriend out for a drive, it’s excellent; even today, more than twenty years later, it still holds a special appeal.
