1989 Peugeot 205 GL 1.0L petrol

Summary:

My first car!

Faults:

A little oil leak.

Some electrical problems.

The idle needs to be set very often.

Nothing serious for a 15 years old car.

General Comments:

With only 45 hp, Don't expect Gti acceleration, but the handling is fun, and it brakes quite well.

The maximum speed I have ever read on the speedometer was 155 km/h, (95 mph), by a windy morning ;), and the maximum cruising speed is around 120 km/h (75 mph). But, with four people in the car and some luggage, this car isn't fun to drive anymore!

The seats are comfortable, and still in excellent condition, so is the dashboard.

This car is quite silent, and nervous enough, when you drive under 55 km/h (35 mph), the engine becomes very noisy and require being careful before overtaking, because of its limited power, above 100 km/h (60 mph).

The engine uses unleaded petrol and this car is really economic.

1989 Peugeot 205 GRD 1.6 diesel

Summary:

One of the best French cars ever made!

Faults:

Only minor things, all of which were repaired at my local Peugeot Garage.

1) 125000 Km, Oil sump leaks, was replaced easily and cheaply.

2) 150000 Km, Timing belt needed adjustment.

3) 170000 Km, rust began to appearing, but I have managed to keep it under control.

4) The paint was fading on the roof when I bought the machine for 2500Ff (around 250 Pounds). Now the complete paintwork has faded so much that I can no longer remember the original color.

5) It had passed every two-year road test. It is also taken to the garage for checks every six months.

6) The diesel pre-heat system broken down around 200000Km, it would not start when it was cold and was very strange to start when it was hot. The system was replaced.

7) The clutch system has been replaced twice when I have owned it. Once because of the leak of the oil sump and the second time for normal wear out.

8) The battery wears flat very easily now it is older. I can no longer wait with no engine and listening to music.

General Comments:

I love this car so very much.

I think it has taken me nearly half way around the world... we have travelled the length and width of France, Britain, Germany and Spain. It took me to Britain, when it was fully loaded, and back with no problems at all. We have driven to Russia, Sweeden and Denmark, also Egypt and Marroc.

The inside of the veihcle is very comfortable, lots of leg room and comfortable seats. The controls are very well designed and made.

It is enjoyable on the autoroute also on country roads. The ride is smooth and agreeable.

It does not use much gazole and will give around 22Km/Litre.

Insurance is not expensive, I think because of not high acceleration.

Excellent and reliable car! Ideal for in the town and long distance!

1989 Peugeot 205 XS 1.4 twin carbs (TU3S)

Summary:

Little devil

Faults:

Transmissions (very fragile - 50.000 km).

Driver seat in bad condition at 170000 km.

Spark module broken at 170000 km.

Clutch changed at 120000, and at 200000.

General Comments:

Very nervous.

Faster than many cars, even some 1.6L and 1.8L ones.

Starts great when cold!

Starts badly if not hot enough.

Noisy at 120 Km/h and above.

Be careful with the manual brake.

Brakes are not very efficient at high speed.

Uses the same 4 tires for a good balance (it's true for the grip AND braking).

The interior has been attacked by the sun at 150000 km (South of France!).

My next car will be a 1.9 GTI.

1989 Peugeot 205 XLD 1.7 diesel

General Comments:

220,000 km on it, never had any engine problems with it, always starts right away. Gets 44 mpg. The engine will run forever.

Acceleration is flimsy (60hp), but I appreciate the diesel's torque for I live in a mountainous area: kicks butt uphill. Tow boats every now and then.
