1987 Peugeot 309 GTI 1.9

Summary:

A true amazing GTI..

Faults:

Bad quality of some components like turn signal commands and other "small stuffs". Broke the signal turn signal command and the glove-box mechanism without even forcing on it.

General Comments:

Over-steering behaviour: fun to play with but requesting some driving skills.

Minimalistic comfort: thus less weight.

Sticks to the road while not lacking comfort: amazing OM suspensions/great chassis design.

Hard to fit two guys in the front with vests on for example: when shifting you may often hit your passenger's elbow.

The power-steering pumps too much, but then it wasn't meant to be use for city but sport use,

1990 Peugeot 309 GR 1.6 petrol (Gasoline)

Summary:

Extremely reliable though not flashy - a true friend

Faults:

Almost nothing. It seems that every three years I have to replace one of the CV joints. Nothing has gone wrong with the motor, however. There are a few annoyances with the interior -- glove box door, which I finally replaced; map light; fuse box door flops down; but, hey, this car costs little or nothing to operate beyond oil changes and fuel fill-ups.

General Comments:

I put seat covers on when I bought it, so the seats still look good as new.

The paint job is still superb.

Always starts, first time, every time.

I've been very faithful with preventive maintenance, particularly oil changes. Still, I have the impression that this little may outlast its owner!

1989 Peugeot 309 GTi 1.9 L gas

Summary:

Not bad, but it can be only a step in a life

Faults:

The spring of the throttle valve went off, and the RPM reached the limiter until the engine was turned off and the thing was fixed. Funny downtown!

Two exhaust manifold bolts broken. During the fix, I had a competition manifold installed.

Heavy oil consumption, due to this engine head design defect. Problem found on a lot of 309 and 405 cars. Not a big problem, just add 5 Liters of oil between 2 services.

Clutch and then gear box command rods changed following difficulties to go in first gear sometimes. Solved after that parts replacement, without knowing why.

General Comments:

Good car for the money. Really better equipped than a 205 GTI with only 50 Kg more and the insurance fees are lower (family car!)

The previous owner (an architect) had the back lights tinted with a tinted Peugeot specific plate between them and the lower part of the doors/sides painted exactly the same color as the bumper plastic! It was nothing, but it really made the car beautiful.

Under steering on wet surfaces.

Expensive tyres (185/55/15).

Typical, not pleasant Peugeot gear box.

130 HP is definitely not enough.
