1987 Volvo 740

Summary:

A reliable car... one can get used to the "boxy" design :-)

Faults:

Nothing special! Water pump, brake shoes replaced at 210.000 km, clutch at 280.000 km, timing belt at 260.000 km... Front seats are worn out (the car is almost 20 years old now) and the seat heaters are out of order :-)

General Comments:

The car has the original engine and is still running very good. It runs with an LPG system... which is very attractive due to the relatively low price of the fuel. The car is just RELIABLE.

The car is ROOMY and really designed for a HEAVY-DUTY use.

Would love to have the seat heater repaired again... I would keep the car until it falls apart.

I had a Volvo 740, 1987 from when I was 16 to 22. This thing was indestruible! It was easy to work on and kept taking abuse.

The only real issue I ever had with it was electrical problems. I got pretty good and jerry rigging them!

An update:

The muffler and the tail lights (typical probl. for the 700-900s')were also replaced at 280.000 km.

Yet another update:

301.000 km: had to replace the ECU. The catalytic converter has to be replaced too.

1991 Volvo 740 2.3 petrol

Summary:

Wouldn't trade it in until it drops to bits and I do a Fred Flintstone impression

Faults:

New water pump needed 2005.

New ignition barrel 2006.

New handbrake cable in 2004.

New fuel pump 2005.

Various exhaust parts every year since the original packed up in 1997.

General Comments:

I have had this car from new since 1991.A total of 15 years.

It is only now showing signs of giving up the ghost, but has never let me down.

I bought it in Germany, as a Canadian spec car and paid for it in American dollars!! (work that one out).

Still drives well, a bit sluggish on acceleration and groans a bit under power steering.

Can't complain when I watch all the berks at "home base" struggling to get their purchases in the back of their little BMW's.

1985 Volvo 740 GLT 2.4 diesel Estate

Summary:

Will never die

Faults:

Nothing you wouldn't expect.

General Comments:

This car was the best car I ever owned. It is still running today with about 500000 km on the clock. I just had to sell it as it got too expensive to maintain.

The engine is a 6-cylinder diesel out of the VW LT transporter wit 82 hp.

This definitely doesn't make it a sports car, but it has so much more qualities I didn't bother. I drove it with a fuel consumption of bit more than 8 liters per 100 km.

It has room in it like a palace. With the back seats folded it you can even sleep some kind of comfortably in it.

The interior is as solid as the rest of the car and as comfortable as a living room or a pub.

Driving feels great in it. It is absolutely stable and comfortable on every road condition. Just in winter you should be a bit careful as it is rear driven.

As it is that square shaped, it isn't a problem to park even though it's size. It just ends where you can see the edge.

Rust didn't turn up.

All I had to do was doing the normal service and changing some parts like brake pads and the timing belt.

I never had any problems.

I decided to sell it as I didn't want to pay the enormous tax bills any more, but doubt I will ever get another that good car.
