1996 Hyundai Accent LS 1.3

Summary:

A very good car for its size

Faults:

Oil leak from top gasket at 260000 km.

Some electrical switches and light bulbs replaced.

Normal use parts replacement in 16 years (brakes, spark plugs, etc.).

Driver seat material must be replaced - damaged by seat belt touching.

Shock absorbers and timing belt replaced.

General Comments:

A light car, well mannered driving, needs firm control of the steering, as it's affected by side winds.

Engine never stopped running (switch-off), some electrical problems (parts), very low fuel consumption 6 ltr/100 km (in Greece fuel costs today 1.72 euro/litre average), clutch pad never replaced!!! (270000 km).

Some times it's noisy (tyres) because of bad road quality, very good behavior on mountain roads (snow and ice), with chains.

Comfortable for four adults, and five in an emergency.

Generally, a car worth the money paid for it, for 16 years.

1998 Hyundai Accent LS 1.3

Summary:

Expensive for its bad quality, no after sales service, a bad choice

Faults:

I had non-acceptable serious problems with engine, although I drive my car "gently" and I go regularly only to Authorized Dealer Service.

Problems like burning lots of oil inside the engine, the car once couldn't start (remain "dead") because it had lost some liquids, etc.

General Comments:

It has some quite goof technical specifications, but the construction quality is bad, and that appears at the noises of the plastic parts, the noise from the engine, the problems of the mechanical parts, etc.

1999 Hyundai Accent LS 1.3

Summary:

An absolute disgrace.

Faults:

New clutch at 70,000km.

Recently changed parts include rear bearing, front CV joint, front shocks, battery and the regular serviceable items (brake pads, oil, filters, etc.)

Quality of plastics and interior trim very poor - both rear door handles have broken, sun visor clip broke off in my hands, seat fabric tore very easily, repeated rattling noises from within the dashboard, and too many more to go on listing... and all with normal use, not abuse.

Central locking on passenger door doesn't always work.

Driver's side window doesn't close properly.

Has recently developed a mysterious knocking noise whilst turning right.

General Comments:

This is the worst car I have ever owned.

I bought this car as a temporary replacement after my previous car was written off in an accident, and has given me nothing but grief from the very first day of ownership.

Do not be tempted by the cheap price - you will more than pay over the amount saved in service, parts and labor in the long run.

Not to mention its Euro NCAP rating - one of the worst.

Buying this car has been a huge mistake and a spectacular disappointment. I will never ever buy another Hyundai. Period.

1996 Hyundai Accent LX 1.6

Summary:

It just doesn't get any worse than this..

Faults:

The only thing that worked well on this car was the ashtray (that's because I don't smoke).

Engine problems from day 1, and about 6 months after I purchased it the front suspension gave out.

The electrics are a scary subject, I'm quite lucky that I survived this car!

General Comments:

A great car... for the crusher! In the presence of the cars name don't use words like safety, reliability, comfort or character.

These cars have a reputation for unreliability and cheapness. If you want an econo box, buy a Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, or Mazda Protege. I would never buy a Hyundai because I don't trust them to begin with.

I have an Accent 98. I bought it second hand and I never faced any problem. When I bought my car 17000 Km were already written. As I followed constructor's instructions I never had to change anything except one lamp. Have also on mind that in Greece the road network is terrible.

Best Regards.

This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I am from South Africa. I don't drive on any rough roads here. I agree with the first comment.
