2002 Ford Econoline E150 4.2 Essex V6

Summary:

A truly massive undertaking

Faults:

Cylinder head gasket failure, which can cause coolant loss or mixing with the oil. Sometimes, this also leads to cylinder misfires.

Vacuum hoses dry out, crack, and can even collapse due to suction. This allows unmetered air to enter, causing jerking and an unstable engine.

The ignition system is prone to failure, causing the vehicle to jerk, especially when accelerating under load or on inclines.

Transmission vibrations. Jerking occurs between 60 and 100 km/h. This is caused by issues with the torque converter clutch or low transmission fluid levels.

General Comments:

The van is generally very well made and the materials are of good quality, but it has its pros and cons.

While it stands out for its robust chassis and overall durability, the engine often falls short given the van's substantial weight. This results in reduced power on inclines and high fuel consumption when the engine is pushed hard.

The main drawback of this van is its lack of oomph; the 4.2L V6 engine is clearly undersized and underpowered for the vehicle. This makes the van feel heavy and sluggish, especially when accelerating to merge onto highways or when carrying a heavy load.

Fuel consumption is another downside. Since you have to floor the accelerator to keep up the pace, real-world fuel consumption can be higher than that of the V8-powered versions.

It performs well for urban transport of passengers or light loads that do not require its maximum capacity. However, for heavy RV conversions or constant towing, I recommend opting for the V8 engine.

While the engine gave me no trouble, the best thing about the van, in my opinion, is the chassis. You can tell it was built for long-term durability; mine even surpassed the 200,000 km mark with proper maintenance.

All in all, the V6 isn't the best in this class of van; however, it is reliable, and if you drive it in the city—even just a little—it won't give you any major headaches.
