1990 Toyota Corolla Twin Cam 1.6 4A-F

Summary:

Attractive and affordable family sedan

Faults:

When I filled the lower-octane fuel into this car instead of the higher-one, the engine was not so responsive and produced more noise and knocking than before.

The car was hit quite severely from the back and after that the car was not really stable to drive.

General Comments:

This car was one of the most economical and fun to drive cars at that time.

The engine was quite responsive as it used the latest cam technology (DOHC)in early 90s.

The model was quite attractive and I think is still not really outdated today.

The interior was very good and functional.

1990 Toyota Corolla GT Twincam 4A-GE 1.6 16v DOHC

Summary:

Dream Car for Fun Drive

Faults:

The ignition coil went dead. Replaced it with OEM coil.

Just 2 weeks after acquired, crashed her bad. Thought it would be nice if she had ABS...

Previous owner messed up with the electrical wiring, caused me to replace some relays. Cheap, but annoying problems.

General Comments:

Previously I owned the same AE92 sedan, but with 4A-F engine. Now it is the same body with a very different beast inside (4A-GE).

The acceleration is instant, handling is like a dream. Just got some noise from the suspension, which I haven't figured the cause out.

Out in the street, you can't find no match for her from any 1600 cc cars. I can even whip a 2400 cc V-6 quite easily!

Mileage is not "economical" since I drive 9 km on 1 liter. But compares to the fun, it's nothing.

Maintenance is not an issue. You can get parts and service from just about any workshop around. Or just go to the Toyota Authorized Service if you want to play safely.

1997 Toyota Corolla SE-G 1.6 Twincam 4A-FE

Faults:

AC idle up was bad, it made engine dead when idling or accelerator was released.

Overheating due to loss of water caused by rusty water plugs.

Weak engine mounting created lots of noise and vibration. Replacing right engine mounting made it smooth again.

General Comments:

This Corolla is not as reliable as my previous Starlet and Celica.

I felt like wasting money to fix this and that, while keeping my old Celica GT-Four in good condition was like investing.

Responsive engine, short-stopping, but squeaky brake.

Corolla WRC AE111 was the last Toyota Team Europe's rally car after successful years with Celica GT-Four.

Possibly this SE-G AE111 is my last Toyota, unless I can import a GT-Four.
