1996 Peugeot 106 XSi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Most fun you can have for the money

Faults:

The whole front suspension system seems to be pretty fragile. Had to replace both front axles due to rapid wear, same goes for the shocks and the wishbones.

The steering rack is making a strange knocking noise lately.

The original air conditioning and heating systems were out of order when I got it, fixed that.

The dash seems be quite poorly made.

The biggest problem was the faulty engine cooling system, which is a widespread problem with this car, especially in the hotter areas of the globe.

General Comments:

FUN! You cannot go faster/have more fun for less money. Has lots of grip when you need it, and the back end is loose enough for some fun. The car is very easy to drive and controllable, although it may surprise you when going sideways fast.

The 1.6 liter 8v petrol engine with the relatively short gear ratios give you good acceleration and throttle response, a true drivers car. More power would be highly appreciated, but that applies to most cars :)

The short gear ratios mean that at 60mph/100kph you are at 3000+ RPM, which means the car is not a joy to drive for long distances.

In terms of reliability, it had many faults when I bought it, probably due to lousy maintenance. Other than that, the car is very reliable and will never let you down (unless you treat it carelessly), although close care is highly recommended.

Overall, very light, agile and fun car to drive.
