1992 Toyota Corolla

Summary:

Best

Faults:

At 360000 the radiator and water pump broke; replaced it with new, and no problem since.

General Comments:

Great, I cried when I sold it. Now it's in Africa,

never stuck on the road, even when the radiator broke, simple to maintain on your own.

Bought it for $4000. Sold it for $700 after 10 years.

Great car, with a great air conditioner.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6

Summary:

Best car that I have owned

Faults:

Well I have owned this car from new, and after nearly 5 years and 110,000 kilometers. Nothing has gone wrong until this this week, when a warning came on telling me to go to the garage to check the engine. It appears that there is a small fault with the catalyst converter, but nothing urgent according to the garage, and the car can be driven as normal, but should be checked if the light comes on once again.

General Comments:

I first wrote about this car soon after purchase, and as I said then, this is the best car that I have ever owned, it has been 100% reliable for nearly 5 years, comfortable and relaxing to drive, with a good turn of speed, and quiet. The auto gearbox has performed smoothly without fault, and the kick-down works well, but there is a slight lag before it changes down. I usually change my cars after 5 years, and fully expected to buy another Corolla 4 door sedan, (very few hatchbacks are bought in Israel, and nearly all cars are automatics), but unfortunately the new Corolla (and Auris) sold here now comes with that awful MMT gearbox, and is horrible to drive, so Honda Civic here I come.

1998 Toyota Corolla GLX class 1.6lt

Summary:

Very reliable and economic car

Faults:

The rubber dust covers on shock absorbers dried and torn away. But this is not a serious problem. A joint rubber cover on the front stabilizer rod was torn.

General Comments:

Very reliable car. All the mechanical problems I had are really minor for a car with 97000km mileage. Very quite and comfortable ride, also pretty good handling.

Also very economic on fuel, it takes 7liters per 100km.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6

Summary:

Best small family saloon I have ever owned

Faults:

Brakes, they need renewing at almost every service, maybe because it's an automatic with discs front and rear.

I bought this car because of it's reliability, and so far so good.

No rattles or squeaks, in fact the car looks, feels and drives just like it did when it was brand new.

General Comments:

Definitely the best most reliable car I have ever owned (I have been driving for 40 years).

Unlike my previous Renault Megane, the engine is very quiet. The seats are comfortable over long motorway trips. I really enjoy driving this car.

The road-holding is excellent, and the performance is quite reasonable for a 1600 saloon, but it could do with a bit more punch when overtaking.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6

Summary:

Truly, a great small family car

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong.

Faulty radio antenna base, replaced under warranty.

Broken compartment lid in the central consol, replaced under warranty.

My only gripe is that the brakes wear out quickly (discs front and rear), and have to be replaced quite often.

General Comments:

I have owned or driven dozens of cars over the past 40 years, all of them European (mostly British & French with a couple of Fiats thrown in). Mostly were quite comfortable, but very few of them could be noted for their reliability, and I was quite used to visiting the garage between services to have various faults repaired.

A friend persuaded me to purchase the Toyota Corolla Gli saloon (he was on his third). What a revelation! quiet, comfortable, roomy, reasonable road holding, and above all reliable.

This Corolla was designed in France and built in Turkey, so I suppose you could call it European.

Great build quality, no rattles, well finished.

Excellent road holding, good acceleration, and reasonable petrol consumption.

Good spec. it came with all the usual electrics, climate control, and a good quality single CD player.

In all, this is the best small family car I have ever owned.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6

Summary:

Well built small family car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the car, and I don't expect it to. The is one of the main reasons why I bought it!

General Comments:

My previous car's soft seats were causing lower back pains, and I looked for a car that would hold it's second hand value better than my previous Renault Megane Classic.

This is my first "Japanese" car. After reading previous reviews and speaking to friends who also bought this car, I chose the Turkish built saloon over the not so well built British built hatchback.

The build quality is very good, no squeaks or rattles, seats are firm, but comfortable, especially on long journeys. The sound system is very good, and the car has good sound insulation.

The car is very roomy in the front, with good leg and head room in the back.

The are some small niggles, such as lack of a courtesy light or a rear middle arm rest. No front fog lights and only one rear one.

The petrol consumption is a lot higher than the Megane, but knowing Toyota's reputation the car should prove more reliable, and hold it's retail value better.

The acceleration is adequate for this type of car, and the car cruises quietly at low revs.
