1990 Citroen BX 19 TZI 1.9 petrol

Summary:

Big, relaxed, comfy, luxury bargain

Faults:

Hydraulic tubes leaked

Rear wheel arm bearings worn

Front wiper and little stuff.

General Comments:

This model is the top of the line with all the electrical gadgets.

I only paid 500 euro for it, knowing about the rear wheel arm bearings (would cost 400 to fix). I took it to the garage to fix that and get an MOT and worried about the hydraulic oil that had to be filled up and up. In the end I got a bill of 1450 euro and fixed her all up. Now I just hope I can drive it for at least 2 years.

I love the suspension, it really floats and glides you through the streets.

1992 Citroen BX TD 1.9 diesel

Summary:

A lot of car for a little money

Faults:

Water-pump broke down at 300.000 kilometers.

Front brake disks at 320,000 kilometers.

Front brake pads at 320,000 kilometers.

The hinge on the driver's door needed welding at 380,000 kilometers.

Rear brake pads at 400,000 kilometers.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable. It's never failed us.

I used to think that Citroen drivers were exaggerating about the comfort of the hydraulic system. Now I know better, the Citroen really is a smooth drive.

The BX likes long distances.

1990 Citroen BX GTi 1.9

Summary:

A cheap comfy cruiser

Faults:

Nothing extra-ordinary; the left front fog light corroded and was replaced.

The rear disc's were replaced at 115.000 Kilometres.

General Comments:

This car is more a comfy cruiser than a sports-car, it has plenty of power and will go fast when required.

Brakes (with ABS) work very well.

The automatic transmission changes gears very smooth.

However the dash and sunroof will rattle now and then. I'll just pop up the volume.

The automatic transmission of my bx (previous car, I owned it for 6 years) was utterly reliable, nice, but NOT smooth by any standards. So, I dunno what you call smooth, but I would recommend you to drive another car with automatic transmission. You will notice the difference.

I'm the writer of this review.. I drove many automatics and at the moment drive a Daewoo Leganza with automatic gearbox; this transmission is 'smarter' but not as smooth as the BX ZF-transmission. My BX was well serviced and the transmission oil replaced regularly. I think your transmission was worn and/ or not serviced properly.

1994 Citroen BX 19RD 1.9 diesel

Faults:

At 250000 km I had the 5 high pressure balls renewed and the drive shafts and the clutch.

Until than really nothing has been renewed.

At 270000 km they renewed the diesel oil injectors.

General Comments:

This car is so reliable.

1992 Citroen BX Progress 1.6

Summary:

A lot of car for the price

Faults:

Once it didn't elevate, this minor problem was caused by a little air bubble in the hydro pneumatic system.

Apart from that, nothing yet.

General Comments:

This is my second BX, the previous one being a normal 14 which had about 150000 km's in it's life. Apart from a bad gearbox (2nd was a problem, but it didn't get worse in the 3 years I owned this car), no problems.

The Progress is more luxurious and has a more powerful engine. Beautiful car, very very comfortable, and so far very cheap in service costs. Or am I just lucky? Time will tell.

1984 Citroen BX 150 A (petrol)

Summary:

One big surprise, the maximum for quality and disrespect

Faults:

1999 - Rear brake discs renewed (rusty).

2000 - New start motor.

The covering of the chairs is completely rotten. The bodywork has started to rust. The frame however is still almost free of rust. The motor sounds like a first world war aeroplane.

My wife feels it's embarrassing to show up with a car like this.

General Comments:

Bought three years ago for F 1000, (Euro 454). Sixteen years old now, just back from vacation in the south of France with my wife and the two kids, 2 and 4 years old.

Absolutely reliable, nobody wants a BX in the Netherlands nowadays because it's considered to be ugly.

Maximum car quality, and minimum social-status (and money!).
