1991 Acura Integra GS 1.8

Summary:

The gear ratio's, power-band, and handling make this car a ferocious little commuter

Faults:

The main fuel pump relay was bad when I bought the car. The engine would start, but shut off immediately on hot starts. Cold starts were not a problem.

I put new pads and rotors on the front. The passenger side rear caliper failed not long after.

The cars suspension was deteriorated when I purchased it. The front springs were brand new (probably replaced out of necessity). The 155000 mile front shocks however, were ignored. The drivers side rear spring was cracked and noisy. Aggressive cornering and evasive maneuvers were very dangerous.

The clutch was also worn out when I picked up this neglected little Integra. I put an additional 5000 miles on the car with the clutch disk worn to the rivets and release bearing sqealing every time the clutch was engaged.

General Comments:

With the new brakes all the way around save for front calipers. This car stops like nothing I have ever driven! The ABS on a 1991 econo-box doesn't hurt either.

I originally picked up the Integra so my wife could park her 1999 Civic SI during the winter. I like the Integra so much I gave her my 1999 Civic DX for winter driving so I could drive the Acura.

Everyone that has been in this car with me has been surprised, if not shocked, by its acceleration.

Some may be put off by the cars cramped interior space, but at five feet five inches tall, I find the Integras low entry-exit, roof line, and seat height inviting. The car actually makes me feel tall.

The Integra's stance whether looking at it from the outside or sitting in it is that of a genuine sports car.

The driving position would be perfect if the steering wheel would lower one inch further.

1991 Acura Integra LS 1.8L

Summary:

Race this like hell, but might get you there.

Faults:

The original owner took great care...

New timing belt at 98 000km.

New performance exhaust at 154 000 (i don't know if the stock exhaust rusted, but it most likely did)

I dropped new alternator and battery in at 215 000 km.

New clutch too 220 000.

General Comments:

My car looks great, tinted windows, stock rims, looks only five years old and it is almost 13.

This car at stock is too fast for the everyday driver. It is very light, extremely fast, and handles very well especially while in turns.

It does not on the other hand warn of impending danger and once at high speeds can be a lot to handle if something sketchy comes up.

It is not safe at all, it will crunch and impede the driver's room to survive.

Great fast car, but buy a big safe truck.

The car is pretty quick for stock, a few bucks will make it faster.

1991 Acura Integra RS 1.8L

Summary:

Simply A high performance bargain

Faults:

I change the oil pan.

General Comments:

This car is very quick even with 180 000 and over Miles on it the motors rev like new. This is a probably the most agile car I ever drove.

1991 Acura Integra LS 1.8

Summary:

Adequate performance, good fuel economy, reliable, worth the money

Faults:

I do all my own maintenance. Replaced timing belt and water pump as recommended at 90,000.

Replaced muffler around 105,000.

Have installed 2 sets of brake pads. At 180,000 replaced both CV drive shafts. The outboard boots were torn, and it was easier to replace the shafts than to replace the boots.

Have replaced the battery once. Oil change and filter every 7500. Have replaced the spark plugs twice. Have never needed to adjust the valves. I run full synthetic oil in the gearbox as it shifts better. I run 25% synthetic oil in the engine.

The engine only uses 1/2 qt of oil every 3000 miles!

The intermittent wipers don't always work. and the dome light no longer works from the driver's side door. The clutch is adjusted to the service limit, but still works

This is ALL that has gone wrong with the car in 181,000 miles!

General Comments:

I tow a trail with this car (2 motorcycles + trailer = 1500 lbs).

Gas mileage is about 33, mostly highway with maybe 20% in-town driving.

I was researching '01 Integras and ran across the negative view of the '91 on this site, and wanted to offer a counter-point.

I will buy another Integra, probably an '01. The RSX's suspension is too stiff for my tastes.

My only dislikes are the car's uncomfortable seats and high noise level.

My other car is a 928 Porsche, plus 10 motorcycles.
