1986 Audi 5000 Reviews from North America

When I bought this car used, it ran perfect and I only ran across 2 problems in the time it was owned.

First there was a problem with the fuel injection. When the engine was hot, it would not restart till it had cooled for a bit. Took it to the shop and it was fixed and never showed up every again.

Also about after a year of owning it, the tranny went out. Took it in had a new one put in.

Other than that, it ran perfect till it was totaled.

Love that car. I had taken it on many trips all over. Drive it to family out east, 1000 mile trips, would drive all day at 75 and it never even twitched. I do not remember the gas mileage, but I do remember it was impressive.

Took my mom to see her sister one day; we took back country roads. She said open it up see what it can do; running 110 on back roads it felt like it was going 60.

I would still have that car if it was not totaled in being hit on the passenger side. The other car was doing 40-45 mph. My mom was driving the car and walked with a headache from hitting her head on the window and just sore from the hit. The other guys car - he went to the hospital in an ambulance with 2 broken legs. The cop said the car saved her.

Since then I have purchased 20 more Audi's of different models and loved all of them.

CV axles started to go bad

Door handle went bad

Dash lights didn't work

Power steering leaked...

This car was very reliable to me.

I have never had a problem in which the car kept me from driving it!

It ran good, decent quick, and handled like a dream.

I miss this car so much, like an idiot I traded it for a Plymouth Laser Turbo, stupid!!!

This car had an auto and it shifted so good, like I said I miss it.

1986, NO RUST AT ALL...

I will be purchasing a 1986 5000 Quattro turbo here soon...

For those of you that don't appreciate this car, or don't know about it... There aren't too many cars from 1986 with these options and run quite the way my 5000 did!

Electrical problems with windows.

Nice car, solid build, German quality, amazing rust resistance, but can be quite expensive to fix.

The car has had two electric fuel pumps replaced, and a slew of filters. I believe the gas quality locally is not great particulate wise. The mechanical pump has not produced any problems.

It has had two mufflers, one resonator, and recently the catalytic converter replaced to pass smog in California. All of the exhaust pipe has been replaced at one time or another, due to corrosion. I found this acceptable, although odd, considering the car grew up with unsalted roads, and not near the coast.

I had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and drive belts replaced at 81,000 miles, as preventative maintenance.

A hydraulic pump was needed at 85,000 miles, due to leakage.

The climate control head was replaced at just under 100,000 miles.

I put shocks and strut inserts in at 126,000 miles; had forgotten how "right" the car felt when new, although it had not suffered dramatically over the years.

The radio fuse (on the back of the radio) blows every three years or so.

Normal replacements and maintenance were made exactly as Audi stated, as well as brakes as needed.

This car has been an excellent value. It was purchased new with $5000 reduced from the asking price, due to the "unintended acceleration" slump in 1986... which, I believe, well, I don't believe...

It has the original clutch.

The hydraulic accumulator is fine, as is the steering rack, regardless of how many people told me I was on "borrowed time".

The engine has never needed any work other than scheduled tuning, and a valve cover gasket.

I have never had any problem with soft trim, handles, door locks, upholstery, or the electrical system.

This car could stand to have more power, but recently it moved to sea level, and a noticeable improvement was noticed (had lived at 4000 feet most of it's life).

It rides and handles well, and is quiet. Still a pleasure to drive.

This is one of five Audi's I own or have owned, just picked up an A6 Quattro. This 1987 is still with me because I like it, and it's the car in which my daughter learned how to drive.
