2001 Audi A4 1.8T Avant 1.8T

Summary:

Finely appointed and finished Avant with early mechanical failure.

Front brakes reshimmed at 7,000 miles.

Heater/air conditioner blower replaced at 4,000 miles.

Cam-belt tensioner malfunctioned and rattled causing replacement at 7,500 miles.

Rear hatch latch readjusted after malfunctioning at 7,000 miles.

General Comments:

Car handles superbly, but having so many mechanical failures on this Audi causes concern.

Audi USA still waiting for the next shoe to drop before replacement considered.

Best on the highway and foul weather.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: During one of the worst snowfalls in the Northeastern United States, an unlicensed, speeding, out of control driver slid directly into the Audi. The car was a total loss with extensive vehicle deformity, but a life was saved even with my injuries. A new 2003 A4 Avant was purchased and performs beautifully.

2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T

Summary:

The A4 exhibits class and elegance.

Faults:

Nothing to report.

General Comments:

I did a lot of research before deciding that the A4 was the car for me. The 1.8T has good speed and acceleration, and turning is amazing with the quattro all-wheel drive. The interior is comfortable and easy to use. Both the interior and exterior are beautifully designed.

The new Audi A4 got 5/5 stars in a finnish car magazines winter test. It was the only car to score 5 stars in that large test, beating Volvo, BMW, Saab...

My 2001 A4 Audi Turbo 1.8 liter is great on gas, but I just changed the timing belt at 84,000 miles which was costly. Weeks later the tensioner and it's guide broke. Who knows how much that will cost. My young son was on his way to visit his grandmother on a dangerous highway. Luckily he was on an exit. He could have been killed easily. A thin bolt in the middle of the tensioner broke. Why wouldn't Audi have a thicker bolt there for safety. It would cost only pennies more.

2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Best performing car I've driven

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

I read a lot about Audi before I bought my 1.8, and I was very excited about driving it. I never expected it to perform this well. Quattro allows very fast turning and the turbo provides good acceleration. It's also a great car to tune for even better performance.

The interior is well-designed and the dash/controls are easy to use.
