1999 Audi A6 2.8

Summary:

Extremely unsatisfied

Faults:

I have had to replace tie rods, bearings, and idler arms.

I had to replace the driver's side axle three times in six months.

I had to replace the secondary water pump and heat sensor.

Now after one week the ABS light is on in the car.

Every time I bring the car for service something else happens.

It seems that a lot of people have the same problems. I am surprised Audi doesn't recall these parts.

General Comments:

I think the car is a nice looking car but the mechanics are not good on it.

I should not have to put all this money into a car with only 50,000 miles.

1999 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8L

Faults:

Its uncanny how the issues I am experiencing currently with my A6 Quattro, 1999 is as per some of you have reported.

In the last month I changed the CV boots, Control Arms due to a grinding sound while turning the car to the left. I spent approx 1400$ for that. Now all of a sudden I have my coolant leaking to which the Service station responds as there being a leak due to the water pump. There are recommending I change the water pump and while I am at that I should change the timing belt too. What do you guys feel?

Can you recommend what else I should change while he is messing with the water pump? I believe the labor is not much more if I were to change the belt while changing the pump.

1999 Audi A6

Summary:

Biggest waste of Money and time!

Faults:

This car was the biggest headache known to man. It was in the shop about every two weeks. The steering column locked up at 30,000 miles while I was driving home from work. I had a problems with the alarm which I took back to the dealership quite a few times. The transmission started slipping right around 50,000 miles. The electrical on the car stopped working around 55,000 miles.

General Comments:

The one thing about audis are that they do have pick up and can really haul ass on the highway. But there are so many other good cars that do that too.

Totally agree with you, my new A6 Quattro 2.5 TDI spent more time in the Workshop than on the road! Never again will I purchase an Audi.

As you state there are equal cars out there that do the same and a whole load more.

1999 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8L Quattro

Summary:

Amazing performance, great style, lacks reliability

Faults:

2 Window tracks broke at 82 000 Km.

2 door sensors broke at 82 000 km.

Windshield washer fluid tank cracked open at 88 000 km.

Starter motor makes weird noises at 90 000 km.

Engine blew at 11 000 km due to the previous owner putting non-synthetic oil in. (I don't blame audi for that one) new engine installed was $10 000.

General Comments:

This car is an amazing performing car that turns many heads. It is quick and has every feature you will ever need. Audi could have improved its acceleration, as it sort of hesitates when you gun it, once you get going it is very responsible.

1999 Audi A6 2.8 6 cylinder

Summary:

I stopped enjoying the car once the throttle body became a constant problem

Faults:

Maybe it was a sign of things to come. When I purchase the vehicle, the dealer had a difficult time "clearing" the faults. (the county I live in requires emission inspections). The mechanic told me it was a good engine, just wait a day and it should be OK. Apparently the fault cleared and it passed inspection. Less than a year later, the throttle body apparently gets carbon build up and the car stalls when ever slowing down or stopping. Yes, I have just recently received a recall regarding throttle body issues, but supposedly only for cold weather states. In addition, my transmission clunks loudly when I start to accelerate. The drivers side window works intermittently (sluggish to close or does not close at all.

I've had to replace the tires twice on this vehicle for what I was told was because of the "European" design in which the wheels are at an angle for handling purposes.

General Comments:

OK, when the car was running, I did get 27 miles per gallon on the hwy and averaged a little over 19 miles per gallon for city/hwy. I like the red color of the dashboard lights, the fact that the rear seat folds down and the trunk space is very good. Not a very quiet car to drive due to the excessive road noise.

I have just purchased a 1999 A6 Quattro Avant with 83k miles. I find this car very quiet with some pretty standard BF Goodrich tires. If you have road noise it will be the tires not the vehicle, suggest some good Michelins may help. And a quick note on the stalling issue. You maybe driving the car too conservatively. There is no way I can get 27MPG on the freeway with mine. It is possible I suppose if I were to drive at 55mph everywhere. I also had an issue of misfiring - and the corresponding Engine Check light - but it was because of overused - old Spark plugs. I replaced them and the issue has left. My suggestion is make sure the car is well serviced - make sure the plugs are good the air filter is clean and drive the car clean. I also use a very regular injector cleaner for $1.00 every other tank.

I have a 2000 A6 2.8, check engine light came on and off took it to my dealer they checked it and was repaired under recall the computer just had to get updated or something nothing major, very quiet and as reliable as my volvo, but way more fun to drive, I have 95,000 miles on it now and still drive great no malfunctions of anything yet, but the stereo from overuse 350$ to replace with a new original audi I guess I am quite lucky.
