1988 BMW 6 Series 635CSi 3.4L

Summary:

BMW's ultimate marriage style and performance!

Faults:

Small electrical glitches (service interval light malfunction, intermittent sunroof and window problems).

Replaced thrust arm bushings and front motor mounts at 213000 km.

Replaced broken a/c cutoff switch and installed a/c upgrade kit at 215000 km.

Clutch shudders when hot - will need replacement within 20,000 km.

General Comments:

Despite above problems, car feels incredibly solid and shows very little wear despite age/mileage.

Smooth running engine is rock solid, consuming no oil between changes.

Drives a bit abruptly in slow, city/stop & go traffic due to somewhat notchy, long-throw gear shift. It's almost sluggish in such driving conditions.

HOWEVER, the car is really in its element under hard acceleration and quick shifting. Very noticeable increase in power output between 3000 and 5000 rpm. A veritable rocket at high speed cruising, the car feels incredible stable at speeds over 160km/h. I have yet to test top speed (and won't go beyond 200km/h without new speed rated rubber).

1988 BMW 6 Series 635CSiA Catalyst 3.5

Summary:

An Unbelievable Sports Coupe!

Faults:

Air Condition broke in 1996. Front power steering pump bracket rusted off last year.

General Comments:

The 635CSi is an exceptional automobile. Its very powerful, along with a hard-edged, jet-like sounding engine, has impeccable handling and steering characteristics. The interior is beautiful, and the seats are extremely supportive. All of the fine nappa leather is hand stitches with impossibly tidy stitching. I get complements on it all the time, no matter where I go. I will keep it forever, and recommend it to anyone. (if you can keep it up the way it is meant to be kept up..)

1988 BMW 6 Series 635CSiA 3.5 Liter In-line six

Summary:

The number ONE Autobahn Stormer!

Faults:

Rear air conditioner was replaced in 1996.

Just minor quirks for an older car (no electrical, however)

Overall, the car has treated me great from the first day of ownership.

General Comments:

The car is very enjoyable to drive, even now that it is going on 15 years... I always have a smile a my face when driving it. The 3.5 liter straight-six is still wonderfully powerful, and sounds superb as well. The interior is beautifully designed as well.

Repair, as little as they may be, and extremely expensive... thats my only complaint.

1988 BMW 6 Series 635CSi 3.5 liter inline 6-cylinder

Summary:

A classic car in the making

Faults:

Not much has gone wrong with this car. It's definitely cheaper and more reliable than an M6, but of course does not go as fast. However, this car is still faster than any other big coupe on the road.

I do have to get the SRS system checked and get new brake rotors and pads. But other than the usual wear and tear items, the car needs no major repairs.

General Comments:

This car is fast and is fabulous to drive. Driving it absolutely gives me a smile all the time.

The only beautiful BMW in my opinion.

I'm 19 years old, and this 1988 635CSi is my first car. I worked by butt off for it, and it is well worth every bit of sacrifice. Not only is it fast as hell, it's beauty helps to turn the heads of all the females who'll now do anything for a ride.

I also own a 1985 European M6, with a brand new engine, now with about 4,500 miles on it. I've replaced the entire suspension, struts and tires. After four months of being told I would never find one, I have found one.I agree an M1 would be even better. I've owned many cars. This is the best running high performance GT/style coupe I have ever owned. At about 3,600lbs, incredible torque and power, what a car, what a feeling to pop onto the freeway, and shift out of third gear doing a hundred miles an hour, knowing you have two more gears to go!! What a car!

I am considering buying an american-based 1988 M6. It has 40K miles and is for sale locally for USD $18K. All original, no chip upgrades, no paint upgrades, pedigree all-BMW service.

Dilemma: Older limited edition BMW or new hi po American muscle Corvette or newer M-series - possibly late 90's M5..?

Opinions? I am strongly leaning towards M6 for her lines, but performance, is well, lacking.

The M6 is without a doubt a better car than the 635CSi. But a good quality 635CSi can be had for $5000 whereas a M6 will run you $15000. I say get the 635CSi and spend the 10 grand on performance upgrades and you'll blow the doors off stock M6s, providing you're not afraid to get a little greasy.

Summary:

A great looker with performance numbers to back it up

Faults:

Air conditioner broke.

Front end "shimmy" is a serious issue to be looked at soon.

General Comments:

The car is really the best car I have ever owned. It is very fast, and is comfortable to be in. It has hot looks, and is a real drivers car.
