1985 Bombardier Iltis 1.7 gas

Summary:

It's ugly as sin, but it goes everywhere

Faults:

It is awesome in the mud, but slow, rough and loud on the highway.

Easy to fix, but you have to order parts from guys out got their stocks from military auctions, and there is no one out there to give you pointers.

General Comments:

It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

1985 Bombardier Iltis 1.7 gas

Summary:

A barrel of off-road fun!

Faults:

Transmission, rear differential.

Fuel pump.

Carburettor.

General Comments:

I have to start by saying this is an ex-Canadian Army Iltis Jeep, and thus the repairs I have made are reflective of its former abuse and not by its build quality.

Rudimentary in design, it's a fantastic off-road vehicle that's able to be rode hard and put away wet. The flat olive drab paint is easily touched up with spray cans (or not) without obsessing over perfect paint.

I will say this particular model is heavy and thus the 1.7L motor is a bit anemic, but the gearing is ideally suited for bombing around town or on the trail. (not good for highway use)
