General Comments:

Car was given to me for nothing.

Had to replace tires.

Spent $100 for alternator - did the install myself.

$200 for wheel bearing. Had to have mechanic put that in.

$50 muffler - did that myself.

$65 - front drive axle. - attempting to do that myself.

Overall, this car owes me NOTHING and still runs top notch for 234,000 miles.

1993 Buick Century

Summary:

Gift that keeps giving

Faults:

Replaced Alternator and Exhaust Pipe.

General Comments:

Great Aunt passed away and I got this beauty with 33,000 miles for $500.

Have replaced the rubber parts as they were deteriorated (wipers, tires, serpentine belt).

It needed all the maintenance that I could throw at it and I will have about $1500 in it when done. (Not bad as that is Bluebook).

Hope to recoup cost from savings in gas compared to my Expedition for may daily 60 mile commute.

1993 Buick Century 3.3 Liter MPFI

Summary:

If it dies, I'll buy another!

Faults:

Replaced Alternator at 55,000 miles

Replaced Oxygen Sensor at 57,000 miles

Replaced Exhaust system at 60,000 miles

Repaired Air Conditioner at 61,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the third Buick Century I've owned, and the second Century Wagon. The 3.3 liter engine makes reasonable power for this car, but it's no race car. If you can find one with the 4-speed overdrive transmission, you'll see about 30 mpg on the highway, averaging 70 mph. If you don't see this kind of mileage, consider replacing the oxygen sensor ($20.00), and spark plugs. My 3-speed 4 door 92 Century gets 28 mpg under the same conditions. One word of advice, if you need to replace the alternator, GET A GOOD QUALITY REPLACEMENT. Most of the lifetime warranty models sold at major parts stores are fine, but the cheaper ones won't last you more than a year or two. Good mileage, very comfortable, and with the rear-facing third row seat, I can fit 8 in a pinch with reasonable comfort. Drove it from Tennessee to Connecticut with 4 adults, and my 3 children, with a cargo carrier on the roof, still got 28 mpg, and no one complained. Very reliable, if you keep regular service intervals, and a very good value.

I can attest to the oxygen sensor replacement. I've got a 1990 Olds Cutlass Ciera with the 3.3, and I was only averaging on the highway about 20.3 miles per gallon. Atrocious mileage, I know. I checked out my O2 sensor, and it was snapped in two! I replaced it with a Bosch unit from Canadian Tire, and instantly my highway average jumped to 28.7 miles per gallon! I haven't replaced my spark plugs yet, so my mpg might go up again when I do.

Thank you for including the gas mileage per gallon you are getting with your Buick Century. I've driven a friend's '93 Buick Century Wagon on three day trips recently. On the first I thought this car had gone a long way on gas after filling up near home. The next two trips I jotted down the mileage and couldn't believe a car this big could get 30 mpg like my math figured. After looking through a number of other entries for the Buick Century I found your mention of the mpg you are getting and now I know my math is close, thanks again. Now, for the first time in my life, I am looking for a GM car. 30 mpg for a large, safe, smooth riding car that I can carry something pretty big inside or on top with a roof rack. One like this with the same 3.3 V-6 will be fine. Friend's car was a gift at 66,000 miles in great shape and now has about 100,000. Driven daily about town with just an alternator and front wheel bearing being replaced so far, but the power windows are slowing down and will need attention.
