1997 Buick Skylark Limited 2.4L

Summary:

Best car I ever had

Faults:

Heater core at 160000.

Crank sensor at 208000.

Radiator at 212000.

A/C leaks (works when charged).

Wheel cylinders at 200000.

Power steering pump at 205000.

Serpentine belt and tensioner at 204000.

General Comments:

Good mileage on the highway; I usually get in the mid 30's. City mileage is mid 20's.

Has had a few issues over the years (most after 200000 miles), but has given more miles with fewer repairs than any other car I have ever had.

To me, the 2.4L is the ideal combination; acceptable power and good economy, much more comfortable and better interior than my 93 Skylark too.

1997 Buick Skylark Custom 2.4

Summary:

Good car when not broken

Faults:

I have had this car for 2 years now and I have had to replace the gas tank, catalytic converter, muffler, all 4 breaks twice, alternator, battery, internal heating coil, and the internal circuitry. 1 power window does not work at all (this has never worked since I bought it) and 1 other window stopped working, but it falls down, it won't stay up. The other 2 windows are going really slow and sometimes get stuck.

General Comments:

This car gets gas mileage and is a really good car... when it is not broken. I love taking this car on long trips. I was able to go from Rochester NY to Fairfax VA on 1 tank of gas!!! It's a great ride, and has great acceleration.

1997 Buick Skylark Limited 3.1 V6

Summary:

Luxury car appearance with sports car feel

Faults:

The only major problem I've had with this car is the alternator. I replaced it about a week after I bought the car.

The motor in one of my windows is shot, it goes up half as fast as the others.

There are problems starting the car sometimes, it acts as if it wants to stall on me. I apply the gas while starting to get it going.

General Comments:

It's a fantastic car. Its running the same engine as a 90 Firebird, so you know its not going to lag on performance. It has excellent acceleration in 2nd gear, and despite its looks, this car can get going.

It's a smooth ride and has great gas mileage.

The seats are comfortable, but there is not that much space.

Not that many after market parts, I was looking for a black grille and only found replacement parts.

LOADS OF POWER CONTROLS!!!

1997 Buick Skylark Limited

Summary:

Extremely happy about this car!!

Faults:

The Driver side power window motor went out.

New alternator at 169000 miles.

General Comments:

This is a great car! It's a 4-cyl, but has lots of power! It is very dependable, I bought this car 3 years ago for $1800 and was well worth that and more.

We've done general maintenance: oil, filters, spark-plugs...We just recently replaced the alternator.

Great car! If Buick made a new model Skylark I would definitely buy another one! It's at 171,000 miles and still going strong!

1997 Buick Skylark Custom 3.1L V6

Summary:

Comfortable yet Costly

Faults:

-The alternator has gone out 3 times (1 time at about 25K)

-The horn malfunctioned and had to be replaced, which was expensive because the airbag had to be removed and replaced to fix the horn.

-The tension pulley had to be replaced at 70K.

-It goes through brake pads very quickly (they need to be replaced about once a year)

-Water pump was replaced.

-Power seat no longer works.

General Comments:

This has been a decent car to own. I have owned it for about a year, and my grandmother owned it before me, so I know all of the issues she has had with it. The V6 does not get very good gas mileage for such a small car with not that much power. I drive mostly highway and average about 21MPG. The interior is a little cramped. I am pretty tall, so sometimes I feel like a sardine. The suspension could be a little firmer. The stereo is very good considering it is a 4 speaker system. My main issue has been the repairs. Considering it only has 77K miles on it, it has had a lot of repairs, and they aren't cheap. Last time I had the brakes done, they replaced the brake hardware. Hopefully that will prolong the life of my brake pads.
