1981 Cadillac Eldorado 6.0 Liter V8-6-4

Summary:

Very enjoyable

Faults:

Blown V8-6-4. The miles on the car are original miles.

General Comments:

Car is in mint condition and ran perfect. Water pump blew and I burnt the engine. The trunk was never used and neither was the back seats. There are no dents or rust on the car at all. It was mostly garaged. And again the miles are original. Call if interested in car 760-416-1951.

1981 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe 6.0 Liter V8-6-4 368ci

Summary:

Good old car, many miles... but still runs fine

Faults:

Since I have had it, the alternator went out once.

I had to replace a tire.

I fixed a transmission coolant line that had a leak.

I replaced the ISC (Idle speed Control) component on the TBI.

I had to replace a heater hose.

General Comments:

This is a classy car. I bought it from a neighbor for $50, it had 252,000 miles and ran just fine. I'm not too sure of all that has gone wrong with it before I had it, but I know that it runs good now.

It has the legendary V-8-6-4 engine that is supposed to selectively deactivate certain cylinders in order to achieve better gas mileage. The engine, though, is supposedly 'stuck' in 'V-8 mode,' but it runs just like any other V-8, though it is a little tired from all the miles.

If V8-6-4 is stuck in V8 mode, a previous owner probably had it disconnected. The original V8-6-4 was often so troublesome that disconnecting the system was the easiest way to fix it.

I just wanted to relate my V-8-6-4 experience as a child. My grandmother had a brand new 1981 Coupe De Ville with the V-8-6-4. This was her fourth Cadillac (1973 Fleetwood,1976 Sedan De Ville,1979 Coupe De Ville) and unfortunately her last. She had many problems with this vehicle. I remember one incident vividly. She was driving me back to Tyler, Texas from her home about 60 miles north. When she pulled into oncoming traffic to pass a dump truck and put the hammer down, the car stayed in the 4 cylinder mode and we couldn't get around the truck. We barely got back behind him before having a head on collision. After that incident, she never bought another Cadillac. I still have the bug though.
