1983 Cadillac Eldorado 4.1 V8

Summary:

Possibly the coolest car you can own

Faults:

The power steering pump broke suddenly, causing steering to malfunction at 102,000.

The alternator broke at 89,000.

It has had minor problems with rust, although I have fixed these with out too much effort.

Oil pan leaked and needed replacement.

General Comments:

This vehicle is very slow. According to an old issue of Car & Driver that I acquired, its zero-60 time is around 15 seconds. It's top speed is higher in 3rd gear than 4th, suggesting that the engine is very underpowered.

Fuel economy wasn't very good in my '83. I averaged only about 13 mpg, however, I have an '85 (which is virtually identical) which gets around 18, so I think the '83 had engine problems. I think the 18 is more typical.

The seats are excellent, and there is tons of room anywhere. It is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven or ridden in.

Visibility is good, however, the large pillars towards the back make large blind spots. This is only a problem when you are backing out of a parking spot, so its not all that bad.

The engine is difficult to work on. Just replacing the water pump requires removing most of the parts on the engine. So repairs aren't easy on this beast.

In general, it's a very fun car to own and drive.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

If you have the throttle body injection, you should be getting closer to 22 mpg. I have the same car with the 4.1 and combined mileage is always 21.9 or 22.2 I drive her gingerly and expect her to last since she made it this far (136,000 miles). The engine I tune myself here in the basement. I bring the distributor to my desk and install new cap, rotor and wires while I work and gap the new plugs, taking my time. You (or I) could eat off this engine, I keep it clean to find things easily if needed and self satisfaction. The 85 is a good car. I hope yours gives you the service mine has given me. Good luck!
