1988 Chevrolet Beretta 2.0

Summary:

Awesome cheap car!

Faults:

Cat plugged up, car wouldn't run. So I got it for $300.

Oil pressure sending unit went bad - they are a bear to change.

Oxygen sensor went out.

EGR valve went out.

Had a coil pack go out. Impossible to get at, as it's under the intake manifold.

Paint was peeling really bad. Dash is all warped and headliner is falling down.

General Comments:

I've spent maybe $400 in parts, but nothing has been serious. Seats are comfy. Car drives nice, handles a little bit sloppy, but it's a Beretta. I would take it anywhere.

1988 Chevrolet Beretta V6

Summary:

I love my Beretta; a strong motor, but a lot of issues.

Faults:

My first car; within 1 week alternator went. I replaced that with the battery.

On the second day I had the car, it wouldn't turn off. The ignition was stuck on and the engine was running.

The wiper blades used to go off the side of my windshield. I had to replace the wiper motor.

The dashboard is cracked and is falling off. It is forcing the wires off, in turn making my radio not work unless a stick is forced between the passenger seat and the glove compartment.

The floors leak.

My gas pedal cable is so stretched I can actually put my foot underneath it and lift it up.

The car shakes at speeds above 70.

Entire exhaust system is rusting, and the only thing that holds the muffler up is a coat hanger.

Brakes are so bad that my foot rumbles when I slow down.

Also I might add that the previous owner had hauled trailers with the car, so I have a tow hitch on the back of my beretta.

The paint is chipping away and there are very minimal rust spots. The clear coat doesn't exist, and sombody scratched the car.

General Comments:

Regardless of the problems, it is still a good car.

Has a very strong motor.

Pretty good on gas.

Because of the leaks going unnoticed by previous owner there is some rust.

General Comments:

This is a really nice car.

The car corners surprisingly well.

The seats are very comfortable with lots of adjustment.

There is plenty of room in the back seats.

All of the controls are easily accessible.

Plenty of head room.

Car has lots and lots of power.

1988 Chevrolet Beretta CL 2.8 V6

Summary:

It is a good little car, it handles well, and it can haul

Faults:

The Beretta has needed a new starter, but I had the original rebuilt. I have to get a new sensor for my transmission so I can drive in 4th gear again, or so my mechanic thinks; and intermittent wiper speed doesn’t work anymore. Along with a new set of transaxels.

General Comments:

My car’s year is the second year the Beretta was produced. I will not fault Chevrolet because they were still working out some bugs. My car was t-boned and a write off, however my mechanic fixed it and it is now running smoothly. The V6 has good acceleration especially for its heavier body, aesthetically my car is about an 8, there are a few deposits of surface rust, but, it is to be expected with its age.

The interior is rather bland, but, usually when your driving you shouldn’t be thinking about your car’s interior colour. I really enjoy the corduroy cloth seats, it adds a touch of character. I put seat covers over the front buckets. I have had more trouble with tires than with the performance or mechanical of the car.

1988 Chevrolet Beretta Base 2.8 MPI

Summary:

A very clean and respectable car which still turns heads

Faults:

The usual stuff since I have owned and with 286000k - coil pack, alternator 2 times, Starter, catalytic converter 2 times, heater core, mass airflow sensor, steering rack bushings, fuel pump, 2 out 3 motor mounts, Headliner sagging, front dash warped where the vent is. brakes ofcourse 2 times, A/C recharge, Trans Solenoid switch which I still need to fix.

General Comments:

A very tremendous and utterly respectable car, the best thing about this car besides its sharp looks is the handling, the stabilizer bar on the rear makes for easy comfortable turns at 90 with out getting sea sick. Mine is a base model silver, but upgraded the badges to GT to spunk it up. The only time you see these cars now is the captain crunch bone-yard with under 200000k The 2.8 multi port injection is the strongest engine it its class strongley believe that it a 400000k motor and in this car very snappy and sounds a little angry which I love.

By all means of-course very easy to work on I have done all my own repairs with the exception of muffler, steering bushings and motor mounts. The only reason why the 2.8 motor does not last is because of the owner not maintaining it, regular engine oil flushes and changes, compression is still strong and can beat most off the line if I bury my foot. Paint is in great condition as it was well taken care of when I bought it and still looks like new, I had to replace a door as it got hit and run Xmas morning... nice went to wrecker and picked one up, but had to paint it. All in all the car looks as new and want to keep driving it to see how far the engine lasts.
