1996 Chevrolet Blazer Base 4.6 gasoline

Summary:

Money pit

Faults:

Well let's see. Got the Blazer and drove it with no problem for the first three days of owning it.

The check engine light was on, but my brother is a mechanic, and said it was probably just the gas cap, so I ignored it.

2nd day = brake pressure disappearing. So I took it to my brother, and all we needed to do was replace both back brake lines, and one front one. Total cost 32.00, but the pressure never came back. Took the truck to the shop, and they told me that with my particular vehicle, when you replace the lines, you have to replace the wheel cylinders, rotors, shoes, calipers, and in my case, a rebuild on the drums. Great. So after all that, I was over 300 dollars in debt to my credit union. But it was okay, because I was once again able to go down the main street, slappin' gears, listening to the Flowmaster purr.

Until... day three. Stopped at an intersection, truck turned off and wouldn't turn back on. Towed it home, replaced the whole ignition system, charged up the battery, nothing. It's been in the shop for about three weeks now. Blazers in general are money pits, and not a good first car or any car, unless you buy it from an 80 year old man who was the original owner.

General Comments:

It will be a decent Blazer once out of the shop. Hopefully.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4.3L

Summary:

Dependable, all around great vehicle

Faults:

A/C began to leak, and later the compressor blew, costing a couple hundred dollars to fix the first ~5000 miles I had it.

Fuel pump broke after ~30000 miles of purchase.

Shifted hard from first to second gear.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable. I must have been lucky with this one, as I have only had a few issues considering the amount of miles that were on the car. Sold it to a friend of mine at 220,000 miles on it (original engine/transmission). He ran it to 280,000 miles, until the engine threw a rod. He didn't have an issue with the vehicle prior to the rod.

I also used to drive very aggressive, and would often tow vehicles and trailers with no problems. Would also take this car off-road; I am very surprised at the durability of this vehicle.

Car was pretty quick for its size.

The anti-lock brakes would activate if the brakes were engaged while going over a minor bump on the road.

Steering felt very uncomfortable at 90mph.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4.3 Vortec

Summary:

Very reliable

Faults:

Not much, 3 fuel pumps and a new transfer case.

General Comments:

I bought the car in 1999 for $26000, and it was money well spent. I really enjoyed my car all the way up to 256000 miles, when my mechanic told me the frame was rusting. I bought a Rendezvous to replace it, and it was a HUGE mistake.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4.3 Litre V6 Vortec

Summary:

Mini APC

Faults:

Just normal wear and tear on the car, but it's still one of the best running vehicles out there.

General Comments:

Very comfortable car, runs like a beast for a V6, good on gas, and the 4X4 is amazing.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS

Summary:

Crazy car... but it gets me to point A and B

Faults:

When I first bought it, I was in love with it. Took it to Firestone to get a car check, and the only problem I had was a cut hose. Got that fixed.

The next day the car would not start, it powered on, but would not start. Let it sit for an hour and tried it again, and it started. Took it back up to Firestone and there was still no problem.

One day, I went to the store to buy food, and when I came out, the car would not start, not to mention that this happens to me every day. So I tried starting it, and it still would not start, and then the battery died.. so I had it towed to the place where I bought it, and they said it was the starter; great, wish Firestone would have told me... so I got that fixed.

Got an oil change at 203,000 miles, the car was still in good shape.

One day, after a long day of work, I went home and the next day the car was completely dead. So I called AAA to come and give me a jump, cause I thought it was the battery. They came, took an hour, everything was good, but I needed a new battery.. that was a 2008 battery. So I got a new battery. Then I took it to the shop, Firestone, which I go to all the time, cause it's the closest to my home, and I got another car check, and I needed a brake fluid flush. OK, so I got that and a transmission flush.

The next day, while driving, the pedal was acting like it wouldn't stop.. scary. So I was able to get home safely and it was the brake fluid. So I put more in there, and it drained every two days.

So I took it back up to Firestone, but not for that problem; I needed an O2 sensor. And I got one replaced cause only one was bad. So he called me and said I should replace all 4, and I denied, and he said that the check engine light will come on in a week/ and he also said I need a fuel line cleaner, but did not request it.. so OK, got the O2 sensor put, in went home and was out of brake fluid; so then I took it up there for that problem, cause they messed up.

So they called me the next day and said I had a leak somewhere... whatever he said, and that he had to order the piece, cause they didn't have it locally.

OK, got that done, now the car is OK, but the check engine light is on.. I was to get an O2 sensor, but then again, I want to get this 204,000 engine rebuilt..

I would honestly sell the car before you put too much money into it. The car you have sounds like it's just going to drain your wallet.

Write down all the parts you put into it and all the money you spent to get it road ready and configure it into a price to sell. Plus even if you rebuild the engine, the interior and exterior will still have the usual wear and tear. Thus you will have a great engine and a crappy looking outside. :(

If I were you I would go for a Subaru WRX or something like that is good on gas and will still have your AWD for snow and such. Trust me. I fell in love with my 96 Chevy Blazer too and was thinking of doing the same thing but I am very glad I sold when I did.

Subaru WRX is a whole different story man, climb behind the wheel in one and you will know what I am talking about. Make sure if you do, go 5 speed automatic. Big difference. ;)

Best of luck on whatever choice you make. I also recommend the STI, you will get a nicer turbo.
