1988 Chevrolet Celebrity Station Wagon 2.8 M.P.F.I.

Summary:

One quick grocery getter

Faults:

Basic maintenance items, oil changes, tune ups, front pads and machined rotors.

The car had an oil leak when we got it, at first we thought it was an oil pan gasket come to find out the rear (right bank) exhaust gasket was leaking th oil.

General Comments:

The car has got good pick-up.

I have actually raced a few kids with it and buried the needle, in a station wagon.

The cabin is fairly comfortable and when it comes up to accessability there isn't much you can't reach from the drivers seat.

We got the car four months ago and have put 17,000 miles on it since and it just keeps going.

I feel the same way. Good pick-me up and easy accessibility from the front, and still keeps on going, even though it is an 88.

My Celebrity has the best gas mileage out of all my cars. My other three cars are: a 2002 F-150 Ford, a Pontiac 88, and an old clunker 57 Chevrolet. Only problems with my 2.8L, V6, Euro sport was the power steering unit and turning signal switch. Pretty much inexpensive repairs for a car that has been driven over 200,000 miles.

To top it all off, the Celebrity has an almost perfect, but a little faded paint job.

1988 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.5 FI

Summary:

All in all, a very good used car value.

Faults:

Air conditioner sprang a leak after 2 years operating fine.

General Comments:

This is a station wagon. It is slightly heavier than the sedan & has a longer wheelbase so the ride is more like a "big car".

This car was a pool car for Colorado Fish & game, so it had good maintenance. Engine ran smoothly, 30+ miles per gallon highway cruising 60-65 with A/C off. 27+ with A/C on.

These 4 cylinder fuel-injected engines have amassed a reputation for economy, dependability and longevity.

The bench seat back is fixed angle, and a bit too "reclined" for my taste.

1988 Chevrolet Celebrity Base 2.8 Liter FI V6

Summary:

Economical, reliable workhorse

Faults:

Alternator needed to be replaced after 10,000 miles of ownership, but this is to be expected from a 13-year old vehicle.

Everything else that had gone wrong with the car was basically my fault (adding a nice stereo and leaving my doors unlocked). This car was in nearly perfect shape when I bought it so I went the extra mile and got full coverage for the insurance. The car held up good in a small accident in which the front bumper sustained a small scrape (The Nissan Altima that hit me saw some SERIOUS fender damage.)

General Comments:

This car was approaching high-mileage status when I bought it, but ran like it was brand new. The interior was a velvet/velour-type material that was PERFECT throughout the entire car. Performance was great with a top speed of around 105mph. The car had plenty of space and could fit 4 people comfortably for long periods of time. Since I am relatively tall (6'4), the tilt steering wheel was a definite bonus. The dash and features were great, but also very basic. This car overall was a reliable workhorse and a pleasure to own. It is a shame that Chevy does not implement the same quality measures they did in 1988. This car is just amazing!

1988 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport Wagon 2.8 Multiport Fuel Injection

Summary:

For $175 It was a great car, cheap, fun transportation

Faults:

I put in a new gas tank right after I bought it.

A wheel lug stud just broke on the right front and I replaced it.

The transmission is starting to go. It slips at high revs in first gear.

General Comments:

For what it is and the miles it is till pretty quick and handles very well, even on really bad tires.

Its got some squeaks and rattles, but those are to be expected at this age.

Unfortunately, it is starting to be consumed by rust, which is to be expected in Wisconsin.
