Summary:
Like a Timex
Faults:
Carbuerator took a dump at 93000 miles.
Key did not work in the passenger-door lock when I got it... evidently it failed at 60,000.
General Comments:
I loved this car. I had too many vehicles at the time, and had to let it go. I tried, in vain, to give it to my stepson (not cool enough), and to my sister (eeeeewwwww, a Chevette). And finally let it go (in perfect condition) for five hundred bucks.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

We had a similar experience with the Chevette's predecessor, the Vega. In our case we bought a new 1974 Vega GT based on the then-unheard-of 100,000 mile engine warranty. The car was incredible. At just over 110,000 miles, the timing belt broke at 80mph on the freeway. We didn't know what was wrong and tried to re-start the engine by dropping it in 2nd gear and popping the clutch. Due to the Vega's superior engine design, this did no harm whatsoever.
The car was sold at nearly 200,000 miles, still running flawlessly and looking like new. I wish we still had it.

While I agree $500 cars are not typically 'perfect', they are sometimes in very good running condition. It is quite common for old Chevettes to have amazingly few problems considering their age - these were very well made, simple, durable, and reliable cars.

I've seen more than a few $500 Chevettes in the past... not a single one was in "perfect condition".
Often people who say that, when you press them for details, they'll modify that by saying "perfect condition, except for the oil leak"... or some other problem... or problems.
