1991 Chevrolet Corsica LT 3.1

Summary:

Needed work but loved it anyway

Faults:

Needed new battery.

Alternator.

Fuel pump.

Starter.

Wiring issues (fuses for display light kept blowing)

General Comments:

This was my first car, I bought it for $1800 cash and was quite proud of myself. The truth is I didn't do routine maintenance on it. The fuel pump going out was probably my fault.

I did let the car overheat and I did have to seal up a head gasket with that "car Go" stuff. Which worked really well and worked on my new car that I had a similar problem with.

The car had a lot of pep and was fun to drive as well as roomy. I ended up selling it when I was gifted my current car. Whenever I see Corsica's I get a little nostalgic and in a way I wish I would have just kept it. Thankfully my father in-law is a mechanic :P.

1991 Chevrolet Corsica LT 2.2L

Summary:

A wonderfully reliable little car

Faults:

It's in the middle of winter right now, and it the car doesn't start. We just figure it's the battery.

The seats were worn fairly badly, especially the back seats.

The paint is kind looks like it peeled in some places. The rust is starting to get to the rear doors.

Oil pan is getting stripped, losing a little bit of oil.

General Comments:

Well, it's a good little beater, it was the most reliable car we've had so far. The gas mileage was terrific. We bought the car for $600, and it's worth every penny. We recently bought new tires, which work pretty good, especially in the winter here in Saskatchewan. It's not the fastest car, the seats are fairly comfortable, but the engine is kind of loud. I loved this car, it was one of my favourites so far. Reliable.

1991 Chevrolet Corsica LT 2.2

Summary:

Cheap reliable economizer that refuses to quit!

Faults:

Amazingly just replaced the crappy factory heater core (factory had plastic inlet and outlet tubes) how ludicrous!

Front end starting to rattle a bit. I think it's just the sway bar bushings though, to no surprise seeing how I live in pothole capitol of Canada.

Other than regular maintenance, I have done nothing to this car at all.

General Comments:

Aside from the well known paint adhesion problem this car was known for, and the now worn out uncomfortable driver's seat, the car still drives very reliably.

I must admit, when I get aggravated in rush hour traffic every day on the way home from work, I abuse the car probably more than most people do their whole lifetime. Funny thing is, the harder I drive it, the better it seems to perform!

My Corsica is nearing 300,000 kms and desperately begging for a tune-up. Yet every time I start her up and take off, I never even let the thought of a breakdown cross my mind. Considering the way I drive it, it has been equally reliable to my former written off Buick, at a fraction of the fuel expense.

I would love to be able to say that the reliability of the car is due to the car itself, however I give all the credit to GM's amazing 2.2 engine. One of the best engines ever built, next to Ford's 3.0 that is.

Anyway, for a car that's now 15 years old, and obviously been driven to hell and back, it keeps going and going. And, when and if mine ever dies, I would not hesitate to buy another, with the 2.2 of course.

Anyone have one for sale... preferably one that the paint sticks to?

I am the original author of this review, with an update.

The car is now in the boneyard, after I leant it to my nephew and he decided to smash it up. Mileage was at 352686!

The amazing part of this story is that, although my nephew got hit head on by a newer Ford F150, resulting in the front end being totally caved in, to the point where the dashboard was buckled over top his lap, that trusty old 2.2 engine KEPT FREAKIN RUNNING!

According to witnesses in the area, they rushed over when they saw the accident, and tried to turn the car off because it was smoking and coolant was obviously leaking everywhere. The engine refused to shut down by the ignition switch. It finally blew about 5 minutes later from overheating.

The F150...died on impact.
