1990 Chevrolet Lumina euro sport 3.1 fi

Summary:

An enjoyable, affordable, and very stylish sports car

Faults:

The water pump blew at 200,000 km.

I just replaced the original starter. After 13 years.

General Comments:

This has to be the best car that I will have ever owned. My dad has a 2003 Malibu, but he always wants drive the Lumina.

In is incredibly fast and handles like a corvette.

When Chevrolet came out with the Lumina 3.1 euro 2 door they built a champion.

The only problem is the pesky door handles on the 2door. They are very weak and wear out quickly.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina euro 3.1L

Faults:

I had to replace the alternator once.

The car had a small tendency to wear through brake, but this was just from needing disc's.

Seats didn't wear too badly although I drove the car everywhere.

I had to replace the water pump at 218,000 miles.

The car still runs like a dream doesn't use a drop of oil, although the transmission slips just a hair from second to third.

It was my main work car for along time.

Now the rack and pinion is getting weak, but I don't plan on fixing it I am going to drive it till it completely dies.

General Comments:

Altogether a damn good car.

And I plan on buying another one only in a euro model.

Rack and pinion dies? Autozone sells rack and pinion for $160 plus tax. I also have some kind of oversteer when turning 45 degrees to the left when you do not feel the wheels for 1-2 sec. Weird feeling, but if I were you I would fix your steering before you kill somebody or yourself. No air bags, plus poor crash rating indicates not to expect too much if you get in a serious accident.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina Euro Sport 3.1L V6

Summary:

A great car if you have the time to invest in it

Faults:

Cracked head and engine block when I bought it. I replaced it with a 3.1L out of a 1992 Euro Sport.

Spark plug cylinder stripped out after a few weeks.

1 alternator replaced.

New fuel injector seals.

New front end after a collision at about 25 miles per hour.

Now needing new rear struts and a new radiator.

General Comments:

It's an extremely fast car for a four door. Tops out at about 120 miles per hour, not that I've had it that fast. The engine has been pretty reliable for the mileage it has on it and the fact that its 13 years old. The body's still in great shape, two minor rust spots on the driver side door hinge. Repairs can become a bit pricey even with a family mechanic doing the labor for free. I have it all over the speedometer and it has as much power at 70 miles per hour as it does at 20.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina AP mini van 6 cylinder

Summary:

The "Rock of Gibraltar" of cars!

Faults:

Extremely small things, such as plastic parts falling off interior, etc., and just general maintainence. Have had some inconvenient trouble with all the doors. Otherwise, no big problems.

General Comments:

My guy is already at 169,000 miles, is 13 years old, but he still runs and runs and runs!

I would get a new car, but this one is so dependable, doesn't rust, and still looks quite new.

I'm attached to it! Never gave a big problem.

It gives me so little trouble, and I am a gal that doesn't know very much about cars or maintainence -- This one seems to take care of itself!

General Comments:

This car is very unreliable and I would not recommend it to anyone. However, the performance is acceptable and it provides plenty of room for a family car. The turning radius is very poor and is impossible to make a U-turn on a 2-lane road. There is a lot of wind noise during highway driving. It is a very rough ride on rough or unimproved roads.

I think you have had extremely poor luck with your Lumina. I have had my share of injector problems and other annoying failures, but it sounds like you or a previous owner was somewhat rough with it and I also think you are expecting a little too much from any domestic manufacturer. Normally, American cars are not expected to last to 200,000+ miles. I do believe however with good maintenance and a little patience my Lumina will run forever. The Tranny and engine are in excellent shape. It is things like injectors and ignition coils or the fuel pump that go out. With patience and a repair manual these things are easy to repair. By the way, the injectors are not that expensive of a part if purchased one at a time and are easier to replace than the spark plugs which are a pain.
