1992 Chevrolet Lumina Euro 3.1L gas

Summary:

You make it happy, it'll make you happy!

Faults:

Idle control motor went bad.

Replaced all brake pads.

Replaced all rotors.

Replaced fuel regulator.

Replaced spark plugs.

Driver side window gets stuck / motor stripped.

Bad oil leak fixed.

Slow coolant leak fixed.

Passenger side handle is broken.

General Comments:

I love my car. Has really good power, and smooth drive for long trips. After everything fixed runs like a champ and never gives up. Has great factory stereo with strong bass and just overall good sound. Air conditioner runs loud, but cool. Rear ended someone going five miles an hour and did nothing to my car and bent the hell out of the F O R D that I hit, he he :)

1992 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1 Multi Port FI

Summary:

A sporty family sedan you may want all for yourself!

Faults:

Front brakes were replaces 6 times since I owned her. I replaced the sub frame, water pump, all 4 struts, fiberglass rear spring, starter (2X), alternator (2X), wheel bearings and Fuel pump (2X). The subframe was a recall, however, and it was replaced free of charge. It seems to stay out-of-line. I have had it aligned a few times now and it doesn't help. I put new strut bearings and tires on one time... still out of line. The full brake job cost me $2100 last time. Most brake replacements are quite inexpensive, but the Nova Scotian winters are herd on her and I had to replace the calipers and parking brake lines at the some time.

General Comments:

I really like the conservative yet sporty styling of this generation. Mine is dark blue, which I love on a car.

I really like the automatic headlight system. I never have to worry about it.

I find the rear seats very uncomfortable, its like you're sitting on a wooden bench. The fronts seats are better, but not great, I really like the tilting feature... My car has the power seats.

The factory stereo is amazing, deep bass, clear treble and never distorts when loud.

There is plenty of passing power and this baby handles in the snow like no other!

1992 Chevrolet Lumina Z-34 3.4 DOHC

Summary:

Performance with problems

Faults:

Replaced all 6 fuel injectors.

Alternator died.

Exhaust rusted out.

Factory Del-co/Bose audio system completely died. It only works for about 5 minutes and then totally cuts out. I think it's the amplifier.

Transmission has numerous little problems.

EGR valve is turning on the "Service Engine Soon" light everyday.

Rear brake caliper seized.

ABS relay shorted out.

Condenser and evaporator are both in need of replacing, therefore I have no air conditioning.

Courtesy circuit (fuse #3) has shorted and keeps popping the fuse. The power locks, dome light, and cigarette lighter are on this fuse.

General Comments:

This is a great car... when it is running properly.

The suspension makes the car handle like a dream.

This engine, however, is a mechanics nightmare. A few common problems are such a pain to fix or replace. e.g. Alternator and timing belt.

I bought this car for $5000 and I have put well over $3000 into it and it still needs a ton of work done to it.

The only time I ever got the performance I should have was when I cleaned the injectors and ran a bottle of "GM Top Engine Cleaner" through it.

Technology from 92 was pretty slow. that is why most things in your car do not work. ABS from 92 is old tech. My old 92 Buick had out dated ABS. the problems you have, is from a time of new technology with limited, feedback and poor technology.

My Z34 runs great! The handling is perfect. I just had a mechanic that I know, repair the timing belt, and it took only 2 hours to complete, with no complaint coming from the mechanic. I don't understand why everyone is trying to turn this engine into a horror story, it's not hard to repair, just time consuming if you don't know what you're doing.

My dad had a z-34, and he loved it. He always said it was very fast for it's price. One day while he was driving it, he smelled smoke so he pulled over. He opened the hood, and the car went up in flames. They never found out why, but he always said he would love to buy another.
