1997 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1

Summary:

I think that it is a very reliable midsized ar which didn't cost as much as others in its class

Faults:

The rotors needed to be replaced every time the brakes did, around every 25,000 miles.

The ABS sensor went out at 85,000 miles and required an entire new wheel hub assembly.

Radio lost reception strength at 110,000 miles.

Engine gasket leak around 150,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car's engine always ran well, even with 171,000 miles.

The biggest problem is the constant need to replace the rotors. Apparently, they are too thin to be turned down.

The car still handles very well, but the seats become uncomfortable on long trips.

1997 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1

Summary:

Has it annoying quirks, but overall its fast, cheap, and not bad to look at

Faults:

Well, here goes. Tail lights used to blow out pretty much on a weekly basis, or at least every time it rained. Replaced the "tail light circuit boards" and the little clips that hold them in broke off the lenses, now both tail lights are sealed with black duct tape and silicone and appear to be holding for the present time.

Fan switch / AC controls seem to have a mind all their own, you hit a bump and the thing switches from vent to recirculate, now thew fan speed switch works only on positions 4 and 5.

Rear defroster wire tabs fall off the back glass at least monthly, no matter what you use to repair them. Finally took a hunk of kids modelling clay and jammed them on with that, holding for now.

Ignition switch and theft system regularly makes me late for work. Note to other owners, if THEFT SYSTEM light blinks and car won't start, leave key in ON position and don't touch a thing for 10 minutes, the computer SHOULD then allow you to start the car normally.. we hope!!

Interior rear view mirror falls off at least monthly, at least the light wiring keeps it from breaking on the floor when it lets go.

General Comments:

When it is behaving, it has PLENTY of zip, I drive at highway speeds A lot and it can pull 21-22 MPG with the AC on all day.

Seat belts a bit tight for a big guy like me even with height adjustment.

Factory CD player KICKS BUTT period!!!

1997 Chevrolet Malibu LS V6

Summary:

It's the first car I ever owned that runs good

Faults:

My thermostat went out.

I needed both motor mounts and a belt tensioner.

And now my radiator coolant is leaking from a hose or my thermostat.

General Comments:

The car is a excellent car once its up and running. I have drove that car twice to Virginia, once to Florida, and about six times to Atlanta. The car is 9 years old and it runs great.

Your car must be a 1997, not a 1996; the identical Chevrolet Malibu and Oldsmobile Cutlass were both introduced for 1997.

1997 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary:

I regret buying it even though it ran smoothly for a short time

Faults:

Engine had to be replaced. Within 6 months the window motor has to be replaced. The shop tells me that the injectors have gone bad. With labor this will cost over $750.00. The struts have gone bad and that "mysterious electrical problem remains a mystery. The car is running at the present time, but the mechanic can't tell me how he got it started and I was charged $250.00 for the diagnostics. I am told I need to bring it in and have further diagnostics done in order to find the problem. Anyone, who owns this car and hasn't had all these problems is lucky indeed.

1997 Chevrolet Malibu 4C

Summary:

Full of problems!

Faults:

Currently the car is sitting in our drive way waiting for a part to arrive and then it will be fixed, our fuel pump finally went out. We'd had problems with it since about 6 months after I bought it in the spring of 99, we had it into the shop and they did a test on it and discovered that the relay was bad we replaced it and continued to replace them till the fuel pump completely died. Our drivers window will no longer go down when its in the shop I'm going to have them look into fixing that. We've also had a bunch of problems with the Anti-theft system, we recently installed an alarm and hopefully that will keep the problem at bay. Oh and the tires on mine are rather pricey. I don't know if its because we have the Gold package on ours and the rims are maybe different of if everyone is like this. I'm glad that I'm no loner single and that my husband can help me get my next car and not get stuck with a LEMON...

General Comments:

The car is a blast to drive I love how it handles.
