2002 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 V6

Summary:

Judging the gas mileage, I think engine was mislabeled a V6; it's a V8 I tell-ya!

Faults:

Got mine from dealer (75K), drives smooth, no warning lights.

My non-mechanic theory on breaks/rotors fiasco, is: the scraping/squeaky sound one hears when braking, usually means U need new break pads; only in my case, the pads have +50% to go. So if it "sounds bad" all the time, I'll basically get surprised when the pads end & is the rotors stopping the car.

Poltergeist (fresh/re-circle air) buttons?!.. Scary.

General Comments:

Very EZ-to-crash car; I'm amazed-& nervous at the same time, at just how jumpy the gas pedal is.

Maybe its just me. but I think the pedals R2 close.

Its EZ on the eyes with nice color options.

For a 6ft guy on such a compact car, Im fairly relaxed in the Malibu.

I'm the 3rd owner (from 75.2K) & I drive it like an old lady; lets see how well it treat me :)

2002 Chevrolet Malibu 3.1

Summary:

Below the quality of a Chevy Vega!

Faults:

At 15000 miles, we took the car for a heater core repair (interior windows began fogging up, interior anti-freeze fumes made wife ill). Chevy dealer refused to honor the new car warranty - We bought this car used, it had 14K OD miles.

HORN blows when making a turns. Problem resolved by removing fuse (no horn). Air bag fail indicator went on and now remains on - Black tape covers this lamp to pass auto inspection. Disc Brakes replaced at 22K miles. Cigarette lighter won't work. When ever >1 person in the car, rear Struts rub on frame. Windshield wipers are noisy. Cruise control turns on/off by itself, but that never worked. Engine valve train is noisy until engine warmed up (diesel noise). Heater core leaking and had to be replaced. All tires worn out at 20K miles. Paint flaking off front bumper cover. Replaced 1 head lamp bulbs, clear lens covers fogging up. Seat belt stop broke off - It's hard to buckle driver seat belt. Poor fuel economy. Transmission slips, when temp. below freezing - After traveling few miles it is OK. RDS Radio works well. Replaced battery. The engine starts each morning and I have been able to get to work.

General Comments:

This car has become my repair nightmare. My wife refused to drive it, so I had to buy her another auto (Ford-Taurus) ). Shop Ebay in search of replacement parts.

2002 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary:

A hot Mess!!

Faults:

The sensors went out on the car.

The brakes are horrible.

My intake gasket leaks.

General Comments:

I wish I had read the reviews for this car before I made a purchase. The car started out working like a dream, but as soon as my warranty was over the nightmare began. It seems as if something major would go wrong with this car every other month. The brakes alone cost a fortune to have fixed, and why was I not informed that the malibu is notorious for a leaking gasket?!?! Needless to say I will never buy another malibu as long as I live.

Just had my car in for blown head gasket. I have 80,000 kilometers on it Cost me almost $2400 (with tax) at the dealers. To date I have spent Canadian $ 5500 on this car. Do not think I will buy another GM car. They probably will not be around when it is time for me to buy another car as I tend to keep them for a long time. Brakes have been another problem.

My 2002 intake manifold gasket was replaced by GM out of warranty with more than 100,000km - you just have to make a lot of noise and threaten legal action and they will pay the entire cost. The car now has over 150,000km and no problems with the drivetrain since. There were issues with the fuel pump, blower motor resistor and turn signal relay - 2/3 were replaced under "goodwill" as well.
