1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS 3.1 V6

Summary:

This car is sporty and has good power

Faults:

The driver side switch for the passenger side window went out.

The hinge for the center counsel is broken.

The clear coat on the spoiler is starting to peel away.

The transmission is starting to go now at 157,000 miles.

I've had to replace the serpentine belt once.

General Comments:

I like the factory sound system. It has taken a lot of abuse and still works just fine.

I love the look of the car, but I would get it painted a different color if I could because everyone seems to have a red one.

I definitely like it a lot better than my last car and would buy a newer one in the future.

1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z-34 3.4L DOHC V6

Summary:

High power, nice looking car, but costly to maintain

Faults:

Timing belt broke which caused two burned valves at 68,000 miles.

Alternator went out at 100,000 miles.

Center console door broke.

Ash tray door broke.

Stitching coming un-done in rear leather seats.

Driver's side window switch went bad at 98,000 miles.

Anti-lock brake light kept coming on every time I would accelerate hard - the computer would shut the anti-lock brakes off.

Spark plug cables went bad shortly after having them replaced at 120,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car handles excellently. I love the acceleration and speed.

Seats are very comfortable.

I wish there were more than 1 cup holder.

Steering wheel mounted radio controls are a definite plus.

I love the car's styling and looks.

The car passes at any speed without any problems.

Very comfortable seating for people with long legs.

Very expensive to maintain and fix.

Lots of labor involved in repairing the car due to the crowded engine compartment.

This car has its drawbacks, but overall a very nice car.

The 3.4 liter is very unreliable. I have a friend who works in a shop. He said one came in and it was such a pain to work on. He also asked me what I had in my 99'. I told him "the 3.8, why." All he could say was GOOD!

I have a 97' Z34 and have had all the normal stuff go wrong, but overall this car was a good buy for 1500. It seemed a very good buy, but there was a lot of upkeep to deal with, but once it's all fixed it's a great car.

It's also important to find a good mechanic if you buy this car.

1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS 3.1

Summary:

A cool looking fun to drive car

Faults:

The water pump failed at 80000 miles.

Leather in back seat has a small rip in the center.

General Comments:

My Monte has been very reliable and cheap to own. Nice stock sound system. Ceiling clearance is low and I am forever rubbing the liner with my head. This car is somewhat hard to see out of when backing up and it has large blind spots. The battery is a pain to replace. The oil is easy to change yourself.

1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Summary:

Some are lemons, some are machines

Faults:

Intake manifold gasket went out at 125,000 miles.

Anti-lock brakes went out at 85,000 miles, but brakes work fine.

Rear end of the car is getting hints of rust.

General Comments:

This car has been very reliable since I have gotten it.

I test drove a 2002 Sunfire with 24,000 miles on it, and it started rougher than my car. My car also handled better.

I replaced the brakes & front tires at 120,000 miles.

The car was worth the money.

1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS 3.1L V6

Summary:

Like a rock... sitting in my driveway

Faults:

I purchased my 1997 Monte Carlo in the summer of 2000 and it's been trouble ever since. Months after I signed the papers most of the interior lights quit working and a funny noise began appearing from time to time from under the hood. The Chevy shops around here tell me that they can't figure out what is making the noise and why (that's what I like to hear) but it is more than likely normal! Also, this car doesn't like certain fluids during certain times of the year. In the summer, it drops oil, in the winter it prefers to drop power steering fluid. I've replaced the power steering pump 5 times in 2 years! And if that wasn't enough, the transmission is begining to slip. = (

General Comments:

The car is VERY easy on the eyes, but looks aren't everything.

When you buy used cars, expect to invest a little money into the car...
