1997 Chevrolet S-10 LS 2.2L

Summary:

A good, reliable value for a light duty truck

Faults:

Replaced front brakes and rotors at 30,000miles.

Visor straps sag over time.

Wiper motor intermittent (covered by GM warranty) 50,000miles.

Water pump leaked at 91,000.

Turn signal flasher quit at 60,000. (easy to replace).

This truck has provided me with over 5 years of reliable service. With a little common sense preventitive maintenance that an average person can peform, and average driving conditions, this truck will perform for another 5 years.

1997 Chevrolet S-10 SL 4.3 vortec

Summary:

Great Small Truck

Faults:

Air conditioner wasn"t working when I bought the truck, still does"nt.Wiper works when it wants to. Little squeak from jump seat. Service engine light comes on sometimes.

General Comments:

Bought this truck from an older gentleman that wanted a bigger truck. The main reason that I bought the truck was because of it being a Chevy. I have also heard that the 4.3 Vortec was a good little engine. Mostly all that I use the truck for is to haul my bass boat to the lake or to take my bike to Bike week. I have had no major problems with the truck as of yet. Will I own another Chevy... you bet.

Recommendation on the wipers that work when they want to. I had the same issue and it turned out to be the card for the wiper delay. A much cheaper fix than replacing the motor which I thought it was.

1997 Chevrolet S-10 LS 2.2

Summary:

A good reliable truck, with proper maintenance

Faults:

While driving down the road, I will lose all power to the truck. It's like you turn the switch off. It will crank right back up and run fine for a while. Can anyone give a idea of what's wrong?

Also had problems with the driver's side door that will not close right. I have already replaced the pin and bearings, no effect.

That's the only problems I've had with the truck. It has been a very reliable truck, and I would buy again.

General Comments:

The 2.2 is very quick. I am very happy with the performance of the motor. Although next time I will have the V6.

The owner mentions losing power, similar to switching the ignition off suddenly. I experienced the same unusual and rather frustrating symptom with my own '97 S-10 several times. Due to the sporadic nature of the problem, dealers were never able to make a accurate diagnosis. They once borrowed the truck for a weekend, putting over 400 miles on the odometer, but the truck ran fine. I mentioned to them the power loss was similar to a coil lead becoming separated. They told me the new ignition didn't utilize coil wires, which isn't completely accurate. The upshot was that after several of these episodes over a three year period in which the dealership seemed unable to pinpoint the problem, the truck finally stopped while I was en route and couldn't be restarted. I ended up having to walk about three miles, which I didn't appreciate, as I was a dialysis patient at the time. After the truck was towed to the dealership, they informed me a coil lead wire was severed, a one hundred dollar repair job which I had to pay out of pocket as by now the truck's warranty had been expired for two weeks. Although the dealership suggested to GM that the repair be cover owing to the unusual nature of the problem and their impotency in discovering the root of the problem, GM declined, which I felt to be an extremely poor customer-relations strategy. I hope this in some way aids you in determining the cause of your vehicle's sudden power-losses.

1997 Chevrolet S-10 SL 4.3 Vortec

Summary:

Sharpest looking mini truck

Faults:

Universal went out at 80,000.

ABS went out at 50,000.

Uniroyal tires are the wrong tire to put on this truck.

Heater core clogged up at 60,000.

General Comments:

I have owned S-10's ever since I have started driving and I have to say that they are the most reliable truck that you can have. It all depends on how you drive them and keep the maintenance up!

I think it is a cheap and reliable truck, the parts are not bad on prices and I love the power that the 4.3 vortec has.
