1982 Chevrolet Scottsdale K-10 350 small block to 400 small block

Summary:

It's a great truck for its age

Faults:

Alternator shorted out after getting it.

The seat is easily worn out.

Starter, oil leaks out of the intake manifold.

Burns some coolant.

General Comments:

Great and well built truck for its time.

Great amounts of power, and the transmission is alright (turbo 350). Everything works in the truck besides the speedometer and the odometer. 4x4 works great.

All in all, a great truck. Would definitely recommend the old box Chevys to anyone who wants a reliable vehicle that's good in snow.

General Comments:

This was a 1982 K10 4x4 Scottsdale with a T400 automatic. It had 3.07 gears. I only owned it for 5 months.

I would seriously discourage anyone from buying a diesel not equipped with an overdrive transmission. This 6.2L diesel even with 3.07 gears could only go about 65 miles an hour maximum.

I used it as a commuter vehicle and in 6 degree arctic cold, it started right up without a block heater! This is the only diesel that I have owned that would do that.

I did take it on one road trip. It was an 1,100 mile long journey. My average fuel economy for the whole trip was 24.6 miles per gallon! Although, the going was slow. I cruised at about 55 miles per hour.

I did have many problems with the truck. My front brakes wore down extremely fast. No, I didn't use them hard in any way. I don't know what the reason for this was.

Another thing that I had issues was the fuel splitter. If one tank was full and the other one dry, air from the dry tank would get into my line. The motor stalled four times while on the road. Once was in rush hour traffic!

Another thing, the cruise control, was poorly manufactured. For one thing, the spot where they put it on the motor almost prohibits you from taking off the oil filler cap. And another thing that might just be my bad luck, was that it drained the battery almost entirely. I would turn it on and my headlights would dim and the radio would go out. It did strand me at the beach one night when I pulled over to check my water and forgot to turn it off. While idling there, the motor stalled and my batteries were dead. I was extremely lucky to have a friend nearby to jump me at midnight.

Something else you can't control is the rust. The body rusted clear through in some places. Rust o'lleane didn't stop it either. I guess a lot of Chevrolet trucks do this to people.

To sum it up, I loved this thing dearly. I am a diesel fan, so I did overlook its problems. The fuel economy was the absolute best I have ever seen of or heard of. I would get almost 22 in the city!

I would strongly suggest that you do a check up on a 6.2L diesel before you buy it, because I know many people that have had absolute nightmares with them. I had a friend blow 3 engines in his blazer. I rode with him and no he wasn't a maniac. They only lasted about 65,000 miles each. Mine was troublesome, but I think I got lucky.

Have fun with your 6.2L Diesel, I think you'll love 'em.

My 6.2 diesel has 300,000 miles on it and nothing has gone wrong with the motor and I give it 9 kinds of hell and it still runs like a bat out of hell.

I'm adding this comment in response to the 6.2L Diesel Engine. I worked as a driver for a newspaper company from 1994-1995, and my first company van was a 1992 GMC Vandura with the 6.2L Diesel Engine. I remember these vans being brutalized, and they still ran strong. They had great gas mileage too! I remember picking up the load of newspapers, and doing my dropoff run everyday on a full tank of gas and the needle would barely move! When the company switched over to the large distribution warehouses, and adult newspaper carriers there was no use for these vans anymore. They replaced them with the Ford Windstar minivans. These vans now are not made for what they are used for. I think it would have been cheaper in maintainance for the company to keep the old vans. They can take much more abuse, and were better on fuel.

I purchased a 4x4 87 3/4 ton two years ago, and agree with the rusting, but hey it's a 87.

As far as the 6.2 diesel engine goes it's tops.. I have done little work to the motor, except replace the fuel pump, power steering pump, and I am now replacing the brake cylinder.

Actually none of this has anything to do with the internals. This truck has over 135,000 miles and maybe even 235,000. I know it had a fifth wheel on it and the original owner had died. I still get about 24 miles to the gallon.

1982 Chevrolet Scottsdale half ton 305

Summary:

A cheap, reliable workhorse

Faults:

Nothing extraordinary except for auto transmission at 160,000 km..

General Comments:

This is a great truck. I sold it to a friend 7 years ago who still has it. It now has close to 400,000 km. on it and it still runs well. The only major problem he had was the camshaft going at 350,000 km.
