1988 Chevrolet Sprint Metro 1.0 litre

Summary:

Best Car I Ever Owned!!!

Faults:

Carburetor won't idle. Clutch slipped. Muffler rusted out, twice. All problems corrected, inexpensive to repair. Replaced the engine at 130,000 miles because oil leaks and burning oil problem that couldn't be corrected. New engine cost about $2,000 installed (couldn't buy a reliable used car for that price).

General Comments:

I love my car. Bought it new, and have had it for 16 years. Hope it makes it to 20. Still gets over 45 mpg on the highway. Lately, it's been difficult to get tires, oil filters. I know I can keep it running for at least 10 more years, as long as I can find the parts to maintain it. Wish someone would make/sell a new ultra-small car in the US.

I have a 1988 that I bought off of my nephew... It started acting up, and sat in the yard for a year. With the high gas prices, I'm in the process of getting it back on the road. Parts are hard to find locally, but some sites on the Internet, such as Partstrain.com, have several. Keep in mind though, it's the same as a Suzuki Swift.

This weekend I went to Walmart for a battery. They listed one for my Sprint that was bigger than the one in my full size Toyota truck for $71.00. Besides the fact it wouldn't fit in the engine compartment, it was too many $$. I looked up one for a Suzuki, $35.00, and it sat right in.

Summary:

Reliable student car

Faults:

Replaced exhaust system air filter, spark plugs (were still factory when replaced), and dash lights.

Seats did not hold out, wore very easy.

General Comments:

Good little car. Not too bad on hills (could have more power). Cruises at highways speeds. Easy on gas. 20$CDN would get me 500KM.

1988 Chevrolet Sprint

Summary:

The Little Blue Car is a treasure

Faults:

The carburetor has been replaced twice.

The muffler has been replaced twice.

General Comments:

As the original owner I have nothing but praise for my 1988 Sprint.

All preventive maintenance has been documented.

The mileage has decreased to approximately 30mpg. I live in the mountains of Northern California, commute 50 miles one way and drove to Delaware two times a summer for five years.

This car still burns no oil.

The front wheel drive makes for easy handling in the snow.

When the car was brand new I installed a CB radio, sunroof, painted thin pink pinstripes on the lower panels (car is blue) and across the windshield, tinted the windows and changed the wheels to 13.

1988 Chevrolet Sprint 1.0L 3 Cylinder Suzuki

Summary:

Finest economy car ever built

Faults:

Water pump went out resulting in burned rings, blown head gasket, and warped head.

Breaks had been poorly maintained by previous owner requiring new rotors.

Muffler rusted out.

Clutch went out while delivering Pizza.

General Comments:

I love this car, it is GREAT on gas mileage, easy and relatively cheap to work on, fun to drive, and surprisingly roomy inside (I once transported a small refrigerator, a desk, and a small dresser all at once; and I got the hatch closed).

Very easy to make personalizations (I put Geo Metro seats in to replace the cheap vinyl seats).

I just bought an '88 manual with a bad clutch for $450 and am excited about working on it. I've got the new clutch and Chilton's manual - just don't know if it is better to tackle the job from the top or the bottom. Any help would be greatly appreciated. bluestonemedia@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

Matthew.

1988 Chevrolet Sprint Metro 1.0

Summary:

A great economy car

Faults:

Have replaced the timing belt.

Seats have started to wear.

Beginning to have some problems with the carburetor, but the car is 14 years old.

General Comments:

Overall the car has been fantastic, I have carried any and everything you could imagine in it and taken it all over the western united states without any problems. It's been a better car for city commuting, than it is for long hauls. Fun car to drive and extremely economical.
