1997 Chevrolet Venture LT

Summary:

Good value and long life!

Faults:

My head gasket blew at 240,000 kilometres.

Fan motor stopped working on settings 3, 4, and 5 at the same time.

A/C no longer blowing cool air after 1 year of owning it.

Back shocks constantly turning on due to leak (sounds like the van is running all the time).

Ball joints replaced at 280,000.

Need a screwdriver to remove one of the back seats, because of a spring that broke off of the release system.

General Comments:

Room for 7 - roomy seating.

Lots of cargo space, especially when the back seats are down or removed (seriously, we fit a freezer in the back).

Very little maintenance with high mileage.

1997 Chevrolet Venture

Summary:

This van is very poorly made, and I would not recommend it to anyone

Faults:

I had to replace the transmission at 70,000 miles, which cost $2,100, and 31,000 miles later I keep getting solenoid codes, and transmission control panel code.

The head gasket had to be replaced at 85,000 miles for another $1,400.

Power locks don't work, had to replace radiator, water pump, low coolant light blinks on and off continuously, service engine soon light stays on, had CO2 sensor replaced three times, air conditioner doesn't work.

General Comments:

It is back in shop for more transmission problems, at this point I am really disgusted with this van and will not sink another penny into it. I will NEVER purchase another vehicle from this manufacturer, it has been a headache.

1997 Chevrolet Venture - Only one size available

Summary:

I would buy another Chevy van

Faults:

Head gasket went bad at 50,000mi.

Front turn signal socket burned up.

Car idled rough-a gas valve went bad.

General Comments:

The car has plenty of power in the city, but in the mountains it struggles a bit.

I like the way the transmission shifts and it's very smooth.

The car had head gasket problems right after the warranty Expired. Chevy was more than fair by paying all labor costs associated with the repair (And I paid for parts).

Overall, the car never left me or my family stranded and I am happy with it.

1997 Chevrolet Venture extended LS typ.

Summary:

Keep a close eye on the venture and maybe it won't bite you too hard

Faults:

Almost everything went out on the venture, almost all while it was under warranty. I just went through all my dealer receipts, and noticed that I complained or mentioned to the service rep. about a loss of coolant almost every time I needed other warranty work done. My venture was at the dealer for as long as a week at a time for repairs. Fortunately, they gave me a rental 4 times for free. Heres my list of most of my problems (not in order.)

At 27,560, rack and pinion steering assembly, driver's side power window motor replace. At 5800 miles, glazed brake pads and out of round rotors replaced. At 20,200 miles radiator assembly replaced. At 26,000 miles, gas gage stopped working, head gasket and sender pump replaced, auto transmission leaking and overhauled. At 31,000, battery dead. Since the warranty ran out, (after 3 years) the only the that went bad is the air conditioning compressor. I bought one at a junk yard for $100. and had a guy I know install it for $180.

General Comments:

We had our problems, but it did not cost us much except for all the trips to the dealer. It needed to be towed twice during the warranty period.

We like the van, but will not buy another (chevy) one.

1997 Chevrolet Venture LS Extended Van 3.4 6 cylinder

Summary:

I would never buy another one

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 71,000 miles.

Flywheel teeth broke off at 85,000 miles.

OE Battery terminals broke off at 60,000 miles.

General Comments:

Liked this van when we first bought it. Turned out to be a money pit. Head gasket blew out with no warning and left me stranded on the side of the road in another state; $1400 later I was on my way. Flywheel teeth broke off earlier this year, costing another $600.

There was a steering gearbox recall on these vans; the dealer got the steering wheel cocked when they did the work and never managed to get it fixed right, so the steering wheel was always crooked from that point forward. The transmission was starting to shift really hard when I traded this thing in on a new truck.

This thing rode like a tank; it would kill you on long trips and anyone riding in the back ended up carsick. The only good thing about this van was when you took out all the seats it had a decent amount of storage space and it got OK gas mileage. The engine was way too weak for the van and it always sounded like it might come apart at any second, especially after the head gasket blew.
