1997 Chrysler LHS 3.5L V6

Summary:

A very nice luxury, performance car

Faults:

Shortly after purchasing the car, the check engine light lit up. At first it would come on and then go back out, but it eventually stayed on all the time. Took the car in for service. The service department fixed or replaced a bolt on the cylinder head and replaced the plug wires and the problem went away and as not returned. I understand this to be a common problem with the LHS. Also the left inner tie rod needed to be replaced, also a known problem on all of the Chrysler LH cars.

General Comments:

Love the car, very stout performance, excellent long distance car, tons of room inside and in the trunk. A very sharp and classy looking car when cleaned and detailed.

1997 Chrysler LHS 6.5L

Summary:

It's a beautiful lemon.

Faults:

The engine knocked from day one. During the 6 years I owned it, I replaced the battery, battery cables, radiator, all hoses and belts, timing chain twice, timing chain pulley/rotor, all spark plugs twice, tires twice, air conditioner compressor, air conditioner fan motor, front brakes, thermostat, oxygen sensor, and crankcase sensor. When I managed to keep it running long enough to trade in, it needed new rear suspension, a new air conditioner electronic box for the off/on switches, and that's just at 88K miles!

General Comments:

Lemon--a pretty, comfortable, luxurious expensive lemon. Rides well when it's running.

1997 Chrysler LHS V6 - 3.5L

Summary:

Terrific car. I'd buy another one!!

Faults:

The fuel pump was replaced early in 2006.

The serpentine belt was replaced last winter.

The windshield wipers quit working this Spring. A new connector rod between wipers.

Both inner ball joints have been replaced.

There is a slight oil leak.

The "check engine" light stays on most of the time - unknown cause.

The blower motor sometimes only works at the highest speed.

General Comments:

This is an older car--these are acceptable problems.

Very roomy front & back.

Awesome ride, handling and overall comfort for a large car.

Extremely quiet inside.

1997 Chrysler LHS 3.5

Summary:

A nice car marred by econo-box style issues

Faults:

Inner tie rod end failed at 50000.

A/C evaporator failed at 60000.

General Comments:

Ride is comfortably firm for a luxury car.

Major niggles with the vehicle's fit and finish:

The door seals have started whistling beyond what I'd consider acceptable levels.

Interior tends to rattle at the slightest imperfection on the asphalt.

Factory CD player has problems running for long periods of time. About 90 minutes worth of playtime before it starts not reading Cd's or skipping inconsistently.

Steering wheel is not centered on drivers seat position. I have the 60/40 split bench in the car, so this may not be an issue with the buckets. This forces the driver to slightly twist their torso to attempt to square up with the wheel. It's OK for a few hours, but is very fatiguing for long touring jaunts of several 600+ mile days.

AC controls are difficult to read during the daytime. The LED array for the temp control readout is fine, but part of the function information are LED indicators on the buttons, which are difficult to discern if they are on or off during the daytime.

1997 Chrysler LHS 3.5L

Summary:

Too many problems to purchase another

Faults:

Tie rod has gone bad, VERY noisy and clunky. This also happened on a 94 Intrepid I had once.

Transmission is starting to go bad. Twice now, I have put it into drive, shifter feels very clunky and then ALL lights come on (R N D 3 2) and the car only stays in 1 gear, it does not change. Both times, I gave it a week or 2 to settle, addes some Fluid and conditioner (even though it was not low). Seemed to temporarily fix it.

Check engine light came on with the last tranny problem.

Electrical problem with the mirrors, won't move downward, only up and to sides.

A/C not working when I bought it. Compressor and receiver/dryer bad.

General Comments:

Engine is VERY strong. This car, other than the problems mentioned is a pleasure to drive. Even doing 70-80, you can step on the accelerator and it MOVES. Handles nice, very roomy and comfortable. Cup holders are horrible, minor annoyance.
