1979 Dodge Aspen Slant 6

Summary:

Great workhorse of a car

Faults:

When purchased the car needed ten years of maintenance work including hoses, belts, oil change, and transmission rebuild. Otherwise the car was perfect.

General Comments:

This has been the most dependable and durable car I have ever had. The large back seat is great for comfort or moving boxes even furniture. The engine is durable and most mechanics have told me it can run well into the 300K before needing major work, which I believe. The body rusts a bit easily especially now at 20 some years old, but structurally its great. Rear wheel drive is good for speed, but on ice can be challenging.

1979 Dodge Aspen 318 V8

Faults:

I won it from a teenager in a race, so I needed to rebuild the engine when I first got it. I made a few "improvements".

The reverse/high clutch is going out, and the transmission makes a "clunk" when manually changing gears.

Otherwise, nothing has gone wrong with it. Just normal maintenence. It has nearly 100,000 miles on it, it's time for stuff like wheel bearings and suspension components.

General Comments:

The material on the driver's seat is wearing thin and needs replacing.

All original transmission, suspension, interior, radio and speakers, paint, and so forth. Some exterior trim is missing.

Seats six adults, the backseat is nearly 5 feet long (very comfortable for napping).

I love my car, and plan to keep it for the rest of my life!

1979 Dodge Aspen SE 5.2L 318

Summary:

Indestructible, rusted out, powerless tank

Faults:

The rear drivers side brake line broke.

The power steering pump seized up.

Radiator tanks and cores leaked.

General Comments:

I love this car. It's indestructible, but needs a lot of body work. It's rusting out like crazy. It's been hit by a Ford truck, a couple hundred deer, among other small mammals.

Well gee, with all the stuff you've hit, of course your car's going to need body work!

You too, huh? The old Aspen I used to own ran down a couple of animals, even a doe once (she was delicious), but thats a given in rural Maine. Damn, what a reliable car that was. The guys at the Navy Reserve center used to kid me about its looks though. It worked, that's all that mattered.

1979 Dodge Aspen 3.7L Super Six

Summary:

The engine is built to run forever

Faults:

The brakes have failed twice because the master cylinder was bad.

Cracked fuel line at the gas tank.

General Comments:

This car is great for a first car.

I painted it red with black stripes and put on some Cragar Street Star mag wheels. Added a spoiler from a 1992 Firebird and bucket seats from a 1996 Mustang. My dad made a custom front spoiler to really set the car off.

This car just looks fast, however it can be out run by a stock Honda.

I have owned a 1979 Dodge Aspen since 1997 and I love it! I have never had to work on the brakes for any reason. I have recked it once and welded another front clip on it. It was originally a slant 6 car, but I have put a modified 318ci under the hood. I am still working on making a nice hotrod out of it. Need brake parts? I have three more parts cars.
