1994 Dodge Dakota Sport 3.9L V6

Summary:

I'm not a fan of Chrysler, but I'd get another one

Faults:

Fuel pump went @ 2000km. Warranty.

Seat edges cracked several years ago.

Strange little ticking and knocking sounds from under the hood. But never misses a beat.

General Comments:

Other than prone to warping the front rotors, and the tiny 8" rear drums, the truck has been to "hell and back" and still looks good.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Update. Truck now has 235000 km, still no problems, and to top it off, a friend borrowed it today for a while (he is a professional driver) and when he brought it back, told me he was amazed at how well it still ran, considering the km's. He was particularly impressed with the tranny and the fact that the shift gates are still nearly as tight as when new (still on the original clutch to boot!). I just wish it had an extra 50 ponies under the hood. BTW, it is on the 3rd set of tires and they are @ 85%. If only all truck manufacturers built their trucks this well!

I own a '94 Dakota Sport 4x4 that has been absolutely super! Bought the truck used with about 70,000 miles to which I have added another 100,000. For the most part, the problems I have had can be under the heading of "normal maintenance" or, in some cases, what would be expected with a vehicle that is "getting on in years." (Somewhat like the owner - LOL).

The way this vehicle is running, I'll probably be able to double the mileage before getting rid of it. Or perhaps, my heirs will be the ones to "retire" this excellent little truck.

As some others have noted, the V-6 is a bit underpowered in some circumstances, however 90% of the time it is more than adequate for my uses and purposes.

BTW - the vehicle I traded in was the vehicle you're never supposed to buy: the first year of a new vehicle, to wit - a 1984 Plymouth Voyager mini-van. It had 217,000+ miles when traded for the Dakota.

If you want a really great mid-size pickup, forget the imports... go straight to your Dodge dealer and buy a Dakota or, if you can afford and need something bigger, get a Ram!

Another update:

325000 km's and finally had to do the upper control arm bushings. While I was at it, replaced every component of the rear brakes and rear axle seals. Engine still ticks and does use some oil (oil control rings worn), but the compression is still good. And yes, still on the original clutch. Too bad not many vehicles were built as good as my old Dakota.

1994 Dodge Dakota SLT Club Cab 5.2 V8

Summary:

Very reliable truck and good looking too

Faults:

Fuel delivery sensor replaced at 53k as the engine would cut out without warning while driving.

Water pump replaced due to a leak at 100k.

Starter replaced at 105k.

Replaced the front brakes/rotors every 20k or so because of surging.

Muffler replaced with a Gibson muffler because of rust on the old unit.

General Comments:

I love this truck. Other than normal wear items being replaced, and with the exception of the fuel sensor difficulty, the truck has never had any major problems. Just keeping oil, transmission fluid and other maintenance items taken care of on a religious basis has keep her going.

I have always keep the outside clean and waxed, and the two tone metallic gray and white paint still looks like it came from the showroom.

Engine has great power, good speed and it is fun to cruise in. With the Gibson muffler, the sound is awesome too.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I also have a 1994 dakota with a 5.2L and it also cuts out when driving. But I thought it was the fuel pump, did the sensor fix your problem?
