1998 Dodge Dakota Sport V6

Summary:

It's made in the USA

Faults:

Engine knocks when I first got it.

Transmission would not go to 4X4 low gears.

The transmission seals cracked at 37000 miles.

Have to repaint the front bumper every year.

#3 sparkplug wire shorted out.

General Comments:

Most of the time it's on black top highway which it gets a 10 for ride.

It does very well in the woods.

On those concrete highways, it wants to beat you up.

Haven't been happy with Dodge dealers at all. If you didn't buy it from them, they don't want to service it.

Also one dealer wanted to charge me 65.00 to reset the computer after the spark plug wire shorted out. I just treated the truck like my laptop and disconnected the battery, then waited a minute before hooking it back up. That resets your computer. LOL.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

1998 Dodge Dakota Sport Club Cab 4x4 5.2 V8

Summary:

An excellent truck

Faults:

The clutch master cylinder developed a squeaking sound at around 10K miles. This part was replaced by the dealer under warranty.

No other repairs to the truck have been required so far.

General Comments:

This is a 1999 model year truck which I purchased new in the November of 1998. So far, it has been one of the most trouble free vehicles that I have ever owned. Other than a problem with the clutch master cylinder, the only work required on the truck has been routine maintenance (oil/lube, tire rotation, radiator flush). It has not yet required brakes, tires or engine tune-up (though I suspect it will require all of these within the next 5-10k miles), and runs perfectly.

The 5.2L V8 is very strong and is extremely responsive, but uses too much gas (I average about 15 mpg). This is the biggest downside of the truck.

This truck is equipped with the tire and handling group option, which I strongly recommend. The 31 inch tires deliver long tread life and good traction, and the extra handling components provide very pleasant handling characteristics on twisty roads. Steering feel is excellent... firm and not at all twitchy on the highway.

This truck also has the limited slip rear differential. I think it is somewhat helpful, but I find that in wet weather (in two wheel drive mode), both rear tires can easily lose traction and spin if even a little too much throttle is applied. Two rear tires spinning is scarier than one tire spinning, but I have learned with practice how to avoid this.

The interior has remained tight with absolutely no rattles or buzzing from dash or other parts of the cabin, even on rough roads.

Other than poor gas mileage, the only other drawback is rear-side visibility. I find it difficult to get a clear view of traffic from the right side of the vehicle when turning left onto a busy road. This is my wife?s biggest complaint as well.

Although the bed might be a touch small for professional contractors, I find it to be just right, and a noticeable improvement the Chevy S-10 I previously owned. It is big enough to carry my garden tractor with room to spare.

Hey I own a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 and I have been having a few problems with it, starting with a clogged cat. converter and then a water pump went and then the clutch and after all that I acquired a squeak in the heater hahah, but over all my truck puts out and I don't mind putting the money in to make it run 100%

I own 1998 Dodge Dakota SLT 4x4. It's treated me very well. In the winter time, it handles horribly in two wheel drive during snow storms, but as soon as I shift it into four wheel drive, it handles great.

I like the size of the truck, it's not too small or too big.

The only problem I had with it, was I had to replace a tierod, but that was it.
