1999 Dodge Durango XLT 5.2

Summary:

I wish my Durango would stay out of the shop

Faults:

My oil pump went out at 36,000 miles for the first time.

Second oil pump went out at 39,000 miles.

Working on the third oil pump tonight at 41,000 miles.

Other than this problem, I really like my 1999 Durango.

General Comments:

This truck really has a bad problem with oil pumps, wish I knew what could be causing this problem.

What were the symptoms of your Durango when your oil pump went out?

My '99 Durango does not hold idle; just dies when gas pedal is released after starting...

Check the idle air solenoid. Mine had the same symptoms as yours. Took the unit off (only two screws) and cleaned it and the housing. The plunger is threaded into the unit and it was unscrewing itself. Retightened it and it worked OK. That was several years ago.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2 liter

Summary:

A good looking, but bad running truck

Faults:

- At 60,000km the torque converter broke while I was idling at a light.

- A week after it was fixed by the dealer, the transmission failed.

- The front tires wear unevenly.

- Left ball joint was changed at 65,000km.

- Rotors and pads changed at 70,000km.

General Comments:

- I thought that this SUV was better designed than the competition.

- It looked great, and had the Dodge reputation. Dodge is known for their trucks.

- This vehicle was not worth the price tag.

- I grew up driving Ford and Chevy vehicles. Dodge is no better than other North American vehicles, not worth paying the premium.

- I bought an extended warranty, and when it expires, I'll be selling it.

I have over 115,000 miles on my 1999 Dodge Durango and other than routine maintenance have only replaced the bypass hose for the radiator. I have done the brakes and spark plugs, but I consider that routine maintenance. My tires wear just fine all the way around the vehicle. Maybe this person needs to learn how to take care of their vehicle before they start talking bad about it.

I too have had problems with my tires wearing unevenly and with the torque converter. I was on my way home from the grocery store going 45 miles an hour when I lost power and was unable to move. We have had our Dodge for 2 years and barely have 50,000 miles and have put more money into it than it is worth. I am very unsatisfied with this SUV. This is supposed to be a reliable family vehicle or so it is advertised, tell me how reliable it is with me and my infant stranded on the side of the road. We have also had problems with sensors going bad, too many problems and to expensive for repairs. The torque converter cost $1,500.00 to replace. We are very unsatisfied with our Dodge experience.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT Plus 5.9L

Summary:

Great looking, but not reliable!!

Faults:

At 38,000 and barely over the 3/36,000 warranty the battery goes bad ($65.00)

At 40,000 miles the right tie rod went bad. ($300.00)

Then at 44,000 the other side went bad.

($300.00)

At 48,000 I noticed 2 shocks were leaking so I replaced all 4 shocks. ($175.00)

At 51,000 the check engine light comes on and upon investigation of the situation, I am 4 quarts low of oil. I immediately go in and replace the oil, and in another 500 miles I am 3 quarts low once again. There is no blowing of smoke and no oil leaking on my garage floor to indicate a leak. I take the Durango to the dealer where I tell them what is going on. They tell me, " Oh, you have the 5.9litre engine, this is a common problem, You have an intake manifold leak and the oil is getting sucked into the engine" The cost to get this fixed ($786.00).

Now we are at 54,000 and all the sudden the engine is pinging horribly when going up hills. The check engine light flashed for about 10 seconds one time when this started, then has not come on since. I use only premium gas so Its not the gas. Once again I take it to the dealership. This time they asses the problem as being a bad head, which is allowing Anti-Freeze to enter my number 8 cylinder thus causing the lack of performance in the engine. The cost to fix this one is ($1700.00) to replace the head.

General Comments:

We bought this SUV new and is mostly freeway driven.

The service at the Dealership here in Washington is terrible.

This vehicle is becoming very expensive to maintain, as if all their parts are designed to fail after they reach the end of their warranty period.

I'd will not buy another Dodge product.

If you only want a vehicle to look good, then buy a Durango. If you want it to run reliably for any length of time, I'd spend my $$ somewhere else!!
