1997 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.3L V6

Summary:

Great car..

Faults:

Had to have some front end work done at about 220k and replaced CV joints, had the starter replaced about a year ago, and that's about it.

General Comments:

This car is one of the best cars I have ever driven, very dependable and has never left me stranded.

With 230k on it, it still runs, and shifts like new. It burns some oil, but that is to be expected with that many miles on it... Great car!!!

1997 Dodge Intrepid SE 3.5 V6

Summary:

GREAT car! Loved it!

Faults:

EGR valve went out at about 105,000 miles.

The inner tie rod ends had to be replaced at about 112,000 miles.

115,000 miles transmission started to fall out of gear when cold.

General Comments:

Great car! Very reliable!

Every time I hit the gas it felt like I was taking off! Very powerful!

Big car! Lots of room! Very comfortable, roomy!

Loved the leather and all the extras my monster had! It was fully loaded! Power everything! Power mirrors, power seats, power windows, power locks, child lock, window lock, cruise control, traction control, 4 wheel ABS, moon roof, premium stereo, rear spoiler, trip computer... etc... etc...

However the transmission started to fall out of gear and it wasn't worth replacing it, so we ended up buying a new car today! With another monster - 2005 Dodge Magnum, 5.7L V8, HEMI!

After driving the 97 Intrepid, there was no way to get something smaller! Will miss it!

1997 Dodge Intrepid Basic 3.3

Summary:

Great for the money!

Faults:

I haven't had the vehicle long enough to list a lot of problems, and hope I don't! I just bought the car with 47,000 miles.

Now at 48,000 the valve cover gaskets are leaking. I stopped at Auto Zone and picked up some gaskets, thinking I could do it in thirty minutes or so, as I've owned GM vehicles and a few Fords all my life. Wrong! As I attempted to put them on, I found I had to pull the intake to put on valve cover gaskets!! I called a mechanic and he said $300.00 plus parts. Well, no big deal I guess.

After reading reviews here, I changed all fluids, especially the transmission & screen. I also hear squeaking noises from the suspension as I backup or go forward, or hit bumps. Also as I brake, not a brake squeal. I haven't read any reviews on road noise.

General Comments:

The engine and drive train sounds good so far. I'm happy with the ride and all accessories. It handles great, like a sports car sedan! However, when I make a left turn, it grabs and makes a sharper left by itself!! If anyone has any suggestions on my noise problem, I would appreciate your input!

1997 Dodge Intrepid base 3.3 liter

Summary:

Decent car for what I paid for it, and considering its age

Faults:

Only problem I have had with this car is the A/C not working; otherwise this car is one of the best handling & riding cars I have owned. I was surprised, as I have never much cared for Mopar. I have driven them in the past and they had plenty of power, but were lousy handling & were a real pain to work on. MPG averages around 27-30 mpg, which is pretty good for a car of this size. My 2001 Saturn got about 4-5 more mpg & it was a 2.2 4cyl with manual trans, and a lot smaller car. Overall, the Intrepid does quite well all around. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. 3.3 liter motor seems to be the one that has the fewest problems. Of the ones that were offered for the Intrepid, I have had no problems with it at all. I really do not baby my vehicles; they get regular service (oil change at 3000 miles, tune ups, etc.) but they do get put through their paces, so to speak. This motor does all that I ask of it. It has great response & starts up almost the instant I turn the key; I can't ask for more than that.
