2013 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6L V6

Summary:

Terrible transmission and powertrain, roomy if you can keep it out of a repair shop

Faults:

Less about the car itself than the TRANSMISSION and powertrain. From all the research I have done this type of transmission (62TE) has a number of serious design flaws. It's paired with the 3.6L V6 engine. This same powertrain is in a number of cars such as the Caravan, Town&Country, Journey, Avenger and Chrysler 200. If you research these cars there are similarly numerous problems with this transmission. This should've been recalled long ago and it's shameful that Dodge sold and put so many of these on the road.

I've also had electrical system issues, failed bluetooth module, etc. Those pale in comparison to having to replace a $4000+ transmission.

General Comments:

Other than the glaring transmission and electrical failures... It's generally a comfy ride with lots of headroom and storage space. It's a shame they couldn't pair it with a reasonably reliable powertrain. Instead, GM/Chrysler/etc. seem perfectly content to produce cars that were built to fail. Planned obsolescence to keep repair centers busy.

2015 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6 V6

Summary:

Great powertrain if all is working correctly

Faults:

Transmission failed at 45k miles on a cold December night. Thankfully we were only a quarter mile from home, so nudged it home. Mechanic said the torque converter blew. Although it had low miles, it was past the 5 year warranty (not all Pentastar engines had a 7 year warranty). I called Dodge (or Stellantis, or whatever their new name will be when you're reading this post) customer service twice, but they refused to help or take any responsibility. They refused the S44 recall for my VIN, saying that my transmission pump isn't covered for my batch. Spent $4000 out of pocket to have it fixed.

General Comments:

V6 has plenty of power even fully loaded with people. 3rd row is great for when you need them. Heated seats, heated steering, dual climate zones, etc... great bang for your buck *IF* nothing major breaks down. But in my case, someone offered $4k more than what I bought it for, so it was a wash, thankfully!

The 6-speed transmission 62TE is a little funky. It has technically 7 gears. There is a 4th prime gear. When shifting from 3rd to 4th to 5th, it feels like a CVT - RPM drops while accelerating slowly.

Oh, and if you ever run into misfire issues on the V6, may the heavens have mercy on you! I used to work at FCA during the middle of this whole misfire fiasco. I thought they fixed it in 2014, but I had some misfire in my 2015 too.

2009 Dodge Journey SXT

Summary:

There are way better options out there

Faults:

2 major problems. The rocker arms basically fall apart every 50,000 K. They don't wear, they literally break, so obviously a faulty design. The first time it happened, I had everything replaced and upgraded and it cost a few grand. It has just happened again. I will have only what is absolutely necessary replaced and then I'm getting rid of this lemon.

The second problem was a doozy and happened as I was on a road trip. After a few thousand km, I noticed a gas leak (!) after leaving a gas station. I was in the middle of the mountains, the next closest garage was another 100 km. I brought it straight there. They weren't able to look at it for another 1.5 hours so I parked it in the lot. During that time, as I had walked away from the vehicle, it really started to spill and the fire dept was called. When the mechanic called me, he told me that the wrong exhaust had been put on the car and it had slowly been melting the gas tank. I felt lucky to be alive. I have not had any exhaust work done so this was done before I bought the car. I'm amazed (naive?) that the Dodge dealership didn't catch this. The mechanic had called Dodge and they said they had never heard of this happening. And the brakes do need to be done way too often.

What engine - 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?
