I truly think that Dodge Neons are one of the best cars you can get at a reasonable price.

1999 Dodge Neon R/T 2.0 DOHC

Summary:

A great little sports car for a bargain!!

Faults:

Paint had a flaw where the paint had pealed off on the roof. Also the rear door handles were rubbing and wearing the paint. I noticed them right after I purchased it, and the dealer had the top repainted and replaced the door handles.

The Check engine light came on a couple of times. The first time they just updated the computer codes. The second time it needed a new temperature sensor. The dealer handled both very well.

A rattling noise is now apparent while driving coming from the vicinity of the shifter, but not consistently yet. I have narrowed it down to the manifold heat shield. It is slightly cracked and loose.

General Comments:

I love my car, it is my little sports car. It has worked awesomely for me in the past 3 1/2 years. I drive it all the time, even on long trips. It is very comfy and roomy.

There is some road noise, but nothing unbearable.

I have not had any major problems with it. I definitely would recommend this car to others.

I did put new tires on around 30,000 miles. But I still have a good portion of my original brakes left. And trust me I drive it like a sports car not a grandma.

1999 Dodge Neon ES

Faults:

The only problem has been the squeaky brakes, although I believe the real problem may be the rotors.

General Comments:

It's been a really good car, so far. I'm beginning to worry about the head gasket, as I am nearing 50,000 miles. A lot of people seem to have had problems with it at around 50,000 miles. The squeaky brakes started about two weeks after I bought the car. I was told it was dirt, but recently realized the rotor where the squeak is coming from is rusting and beginning to flake.

1999 Dodge Neon

Summary:

Too little car for too much money

Faults:

The brakes squeak all the time, especially when it rains. The brake discs had to be resurfaced at 18,000 miles. The front rotors and brake pads had to be replaced at 30,000 miles.

My first tire went out at 3,000 miles. The other three factory tires have also gone out. Factory replacement of the tires is expensive.

The air conditioner and heater make a rattling noise every other month.

The left rear speaker went out before I made it home from the dealership. I took it back and they told me they fixed it. Three weeks later they called me to come in because they got the part.

The back is too high. It is hard for us shorter people to see behind.

General Comments:

I took the car in to three different dealerships and they all said there was nothing wrong with the brakes and charged me between $20 - $40. The steering wheel shook when I pushed the brakes. Finally, I took it to an independent brake shop and they identified and fixed the problem for $350.

I must say that my car is reliable. I travel long distances and have never had a breakdown.

The air conditioner and heater is great if you don't mind a little noise more often than not.

The antenna has great reception. Even though one speaker is out, the stereo is still great.

The cabin is very roomy. It is a little car with a lot of room.

My favorite feature of the car is the light group. The light under the stereo and the rear view mirror are strategically placed.

1999 Dodge Neon Base 2.0

Summary:

It is fast, but too many problems

Faults:

I have owned this Neon for about 3 months, and so far the service engine light came on about 1 month after getting it, but it soon went off, well then my horn stops working soon after that.

The next thing you know, reverse goes out on my car, and it drives in neutral, so I call a service shop, and they tell me that this is very common in these types of car, and that it is either my transmission or just the shifting linkage. I am hoping for the linkage, even though it is still under warranty. I still don't want to have to wait for a new tranny to be dropped in it.

Also, ever since getting the car, I have noticed a popping sound in the steering column whenever I go over a bump or turn sharply. I have no clue what this could be, but other than these problems, the car is nice and fast for the price.
